Gulpen-Wittem: Monastery, Brewing Culture and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Gulpen-Wittem
Everyone is welcome at Klooster Wittem, a pilgrimage destination. Visitors can find peace, prayer and reflection here. At the same time, Gulpen-Wittem offers a wide range of experiences: monastery tours, art and history, brewery visits, and hiking and cycling routes give your trip different focuses.
Experience Wittem Monastery and Culture
Tours at Klooster Wittem may include the monastery church and chapels, the old refectory, the monastery library, the crypt and the monastery garden. It is best to check with the monastery in advance to find out which stops are included in a tour. If you are interested in the connection between the monastery and its surroundings, consider the Kasteel en klooster van Wittem walking route: it starts at the Redemptorist monastery in Wittem, which is also home to a special library, and passes Kasteel Wittem. Fields, woodland edges and gentle hills shape the landscape along the way.
In Wijlre, the Kunst- en Verzamelhuis has 20 museum rooms featuring snapshots of life from 1870 to 1970, as well as art by Tineke van Dien. Buitenplaats Kasteel Wijlre offers a different combination of art, architecture, cultural heritage and nature. Visitors can walk along the moat and view modern sculptures amid lush greenery. Buitenplaats presents an international programme of exhibitions and public activities each year; check which exhibitions are currently on display before your visit.
Breweries and Tastings
There are several ways to discover the brewing culture, too. A Brand beer tour includes the Brand Museum, the copper brewing kettles, information about ingredients and the brewing process, and a tasting of a Brand speciality beer. A tour of the Gulpener brewery includes a blind tasting. The vintage beer tasting takes place in the brewery’s vaulted cellars and features beers from the Netherlands and abroad.
The Brand Proeflokaal in Wijlre serves as a starting point for brewery tours and other packages. Beer, savoury snacks, coffee and Limburgse vlaai are available there. The Gulpener BrouwLokaal offers vaulted cellars with more than 100 beer styles from around the world; visitors can brew their own beer in a microbrewery. Tours, packages and food and drink offerings may change. Check with the relevant brewery in advance for details of your preferred tour and the latest information.
Hikes Through History and Landscape
Gulpen-Wittem has 330 kilometres of walking trails, including 62 recreational walks of varying lengths. These include themed walks that highlight art, history and culture along the way. Two walks of 10 and 12 kilometres pass 19 memorial monuments; audio clips share stories about the monuments and events of the Second World War. In Eys, a 3.7-kilometre walking route focuses on chalk, marl and limestone. This offers a choice of different route lengths and themes, from geology to commemorative history.
The landscape also has its own highlights: the Tussen Eys en Nijswiller route combines steep climbs with panoramic views and vineyard scenery. The Via Gulia is another option for longer hikes, as a point-to-point trail and long-distance hiking route starting in Gulpen-Wittem. The Nacht van Gulpen is a recurring special event, covering more than 70 kilometres in a single night. Check the latest agenda for the event date; the route overview may also be updated.
By Bike or Along the Wine Route
For cycling plans, Gulpen-Wittem is connected to the Fietsroutenetwerk Limburg. The numbered junction system lets you create your own cycling routes. Three signposted mountain bike trails, each 25 kilometres long, also wind through the hilly landscape. Signage and route details may change, so check the latest information before planning your route.
The Route des Vins Wahlwiller-Eys offers a different perspective on the area. The approximately 10-kilometre wine route runs around Eys and Wahlwiller, passes five vineyards and shares information about wine along the way. When planning your trip, you can choose between hikes, cycling routes, art and cultural attractions, and experiences centred on beer and wine.
