Slenaken is located in the Gulp Valley near the Belgian border. The hiking routes each focus on different landscapes: forests and valleys, waterways, and open countryside. Historic buildings also offer insights into the history of the area. If you are considering Slenaken for a trip with hikes, you can distinguish between the trails by their routes and the landscapes they each highlight.

Hiking between the Gulp Valley and Groote Bosch

The “Groote Boschroute Slenaken” explores the area north of Slenaken and Groote Bosch, a wooded area of more than 60 hectares. The route passes through the Gulp Valley and occasionally offers views of the Gulp, a tributary of the Geul. Its features also include varied landscapes with a diverse range of plants and animals. The Gulp Valley is also home to beavers and badgers. This route thus focuses on the woodland, the valley, and views of the river.

The route “Langs groen en blauw in het Gulpdal – Slenaken” offers a different sequence of landscapes. It follows the water through varied surroundings with deciduous forests, grassland, and orchards. When choosing a route, you can compare their different focuses: the Groote Boschroute takes in woodland and occasional views of the Gulp, while the second route brings together deciduous forest, grassland, and orchards along the water.

Route itineraries and crossing the border

The “Heuvelland (Tag 1)” route climbs from the Gulp Valley to Groote Bosch and then follows the meandering Gulp to Slenaken. Its itinerary combines the ascent to the wooded area with the onward path along the river to the destination. This describes the route in more detail than simply naming a region: here, the valley, ascent, and river course follow one after another.

The cross-border hiking route “Grenzeloos wandelen bij Slenaken” crosses the Belgian border in the direction of Teuven. South of Slenaken, it passes through the wooded surroundings of Onderste Bos. If crossing the border is a particular priority when choosing a route, this is a distinct option alongside trails whose described features focus mainly on the Gulp Valley, forests, and changes in scenery.

Local history in a chapel, church, and mill

The Sint Annakapel is a small brick wayside chapel dating from 1715. It stands at a road junction beneath a large chestnut tree in Schilberg near Slenaken. The Roman Catholic church in Slenaken is another historic landmark: it was built by Brussels architect Wincqs in 1793.

Just outside Slenaken, the Broekmolen stands at the foot of the slope of the “Grote Bos,” on the road from Slenaken to Gulpen. It was originally a grain and oil mill. Its mechanisms included an overshot waterwheel: with this design, water is directed onto the wheel from above. This helps explain the mill in terms of both its former use and how it was powered. Together with the chapel and church, it adds a glimpse of the architectural and technical heritage around Slenaken to the hiking trails.
