Wittem: Monastery, Churches and Walking Trails
Accommodation in Wittem
If you’re looking for hotels in Wittem, you can plan your trip around culture, reflection or activity. Klooster Wittem, historic churches and buildings, and walking and cycling routes offer different ways to explore the area. When planning, pay particular attention to opening hours, route lengths and stated starting points.
Monastery and architectural history
The monastery church and chapels at Klooster Wittem are open seven days a week for quiet reflection, prayer or contemplation: daily from 8:00 a.m. to 6:15 p.m., and until 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays. Check the opening hours before you travel.
The Redemptorist monastery complex was rebuilt in 1894 to a design by Johannes Kayser. The richly decorated Baroque monastery church, dating from 1729 to 1733, was preserved. The building therefore brings together two historical periods: the church’s construction in the early 18th century and the rebuilding of the complex in 1894.
The R.K. Church at Kerkstraat 31 has a limestone nave that partly dates back to the 12th century. The church was extended in 1905 by P.J.H. Cuypers. Kasteel Wittem is a 15th-century castle complex with a round corner tower.
Watermolen Wittem is another of the village’s historic buildings. It was built in 1835 by the rentiers of Kasteel Wittem, the Merkelbach brothers. The waterwheel is entirely housed inside the building; the mill stream runs through the garden of Klooster Wittem.
Walks and routes
The “Kasteel en klooster van Wittem” route starts at the Redemptorist monastery in Wittem and is 4.9 km long. It passes Kasteel Wittem and goes through a landscape of fields, woodland edges and gentle hills. From Wittem, you can also reach the gently rising fields outside the village.
The Wittemer Rugzakwandeling is 11 km long. It includes a route booklet, a route map, reflective texts and a photography challenge. The walk can be started from the reception at Klooster Wittem. Before your visit, check whether this starting point is available on your planned date. At 11 km, the Rugzakwandeling is more than twice as long as the 4.9 km “Kasteel en klooster van Wittem” route.
Klooster Wittem regularly organizes guided group walks, including pilgrimages, reflective walks, themed walks and silent walks. As the program may change, check the dates and available tours before making plans.
Cycling route and getting there
Two starting points are listed for the “Lekker Rondje Heuvelland” cycling route: the Klooster Wittem car park at Wittemer Allee 34, or the Visit Zuid-Limburg Shop at Dorpsstraat 27 in Gulpen. If you’re planning to ride this loop, check the route details before setting off.
To reach Klooster Wittem from Maastricht railway station, take bus route 350 towards Vaals/Aachen to the Sinselbeek stop; from there, it’s a five-minute walk. As bus routes and stops may change, check the connection before you travel.
