Voerendaal combines a varied landscape of green fields, sunken lanes, historic farmsteads and distinctive village centres with traces of archaeological history. The Via Belgica crosses the municipality; its exact route is known for almost seven kilometres in Voerendaal and Heerlen. As you explore Voerendaal, you’ll encounter both the character of the landscape and its Roman past. Walking routes, historic sites and activities centred on wine and golf offer a range of themes for your stay.

Roman traces and historic sites

Villa Voerendaal is considered the largest Roman villa in the Netherlands. At the archaeological site “Vindplaats Voerendaal – Onder de kerktoren”, an app offers an experience with Archie, a virtual archaeologist who tells visitors about Voerendaal’s origins. This takes you from the archaeological finds to the history of the place. The Sint-Laurentiuskerk is another special landmark: it is the only church in the Netherlands to have been consecrated by a pope.

Since late 2024, a permanent mini-exhibition featuring finds from Villa Voerendaal has been open to visitors at Voerendaal’s municipal office. Check the visiting arrangements before your visit. Kasteel Cortenbach is also one of the four castles that can be visited around the centre of Voerendaal. Exploring the area brings together sites of different kinds: an archaeological site, a church, an exhibition and a castle.

Walking routes and countryside in Land van Kalk

When planning a walk, you can compare the stated route lengths. “Middeleeuwse avonturen in Voerendaal” is an 8.8-kilometre walking route. The Kunradersteenroute in Land van Kalk is 10.5 kilometres long, a difference of 1.7 kilometres. The 35-kilometre Parkstadroute between Simpelveld and Schinnen is considerably longer and is designed for walkers and cyclists. The walking routes are considered easy to walk and suitable for walkers of all levels.

Land van Kalk provides the broader landscape setting for the Kunradersteenroute: the cross-border plateau of Kunradersteen stretches from Aachen via Bocholtz to Voerendaal. For the “Middeleeuwse avonturen in Voerendaal” route, parking is available at Voerendaal railway station. As route conditions may change, check the path before setting out. The different route lengths make it easier to compare options when planning your walk.

Wine country, tours and golf

The Route des Vins takes you on foot through the wine country of Voerendaal and its surroundings. Wine routes also wind through the South Limburg wine country in Land van Kalk, around Ubachsberg and Winthagen; they are approximately 12 and 8 kilometres long, respectively. Wijngoed Fromberg offers guided tours, wine tastings and various package options. Check availability before you travel.

You can also discover Kunradersteen by learning how it is processed: guided tours at the Kunradersteen-Groeve explain how the stone is turned into modern applications. Golf enthusiasts will find Golf & Country Club Hoenshuis in Voerendaal, with an 18-hole golf course set among woods and hills. The Hoenshuis Golf Academy offers individual and group lessons, clinics and masterclasses. As schedules and booking requirements may change, check them before your visit.
