Leudal between stream valleys and cultural heritage
Accommodation in Leudal
On the eastern side, the municipality of Leudal is bordered by the Maasplassen lakes. A distinctive natural area is the protected Leudal Natura 2000 site: a characteristic stream valley landscape in Midden-Limburg, shaped by deeply incised streams, old meanders, damp deciduous forests and flower-rich grasslands. Anyone interested in landscapes and wildlife can also find habitats here for kingfishers, grey wagtails, badgers and beavers, as well as bitterlings, weatherfish and European bullheads. These animals are part of the habitat; sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Experience nature and choose your routes
In Leudal, you can use numbered hiking junctions to plan your own routes. There are also several marked hiking trails around the 16 village centres. For more specific planning, two routes of different lengths are available: the “Bekenroute door het Leudal” is 12.1 kilometres long and starts at Raadhuisplein or Roggelseweg in Haelen. The “WWW-wandelroute” — also known as the “Water Wandel Wereld” route — passes through Leudal and is about 15 kilometres long. Based on the stated distances, it is the longer of the two. Check the route details and directions before setting out.
The Bomenbos Leudal explores a different aspect of nature. This newly planted woodland covers about 6,000 square metres and contains 90 different trees, divided into ten categories. These figures give the site a distinct focus within the diverse stream valley landscape. As always, newly planted trees need time to grow.
“De geheime sleutels van het Leudal” is described as a possible activity for families with children aged about six to twelve: a smartphone treasure hunt where participants solve puzzles and uncover secrets on site by following clues. As availability may vary, it is advisable to confirm this activity before your trip.
Culture, remembrance and architecture
The Leudalmuseum displays objects in ten thematic groups: prehistory, Romans, crafts, PLEM/electricity, marksmen’s guilds, religion, household, the Second World War, warfare and clothing. The themes span early history and everyday life through to religion and the remembrance of war. The Monument van Verdraagzaamheid commemorates the war years from 1940 to 1945 and the more than 800 military personnel from eleven nations who lost their lives in the Leudal area. The monument was unveiled on 8 March 2001. An international memorial service is held there every year on the Thursday closest to 16 November, organised by Stichting Herdenkingsmonument Militairen together with the municipality of Leudal. If you plan to attend, check the date before your trip.
Historic buildings also tell stories of different eras. The St. Elisabethmolen was a watermill on the Leubeek and belonged to Klooster Sint-Elisabethsdal. In 2014, the part below the water was partially replaced; the mill received a new waterwheel and a generator to produce green electricity. Today, a roof protects the mill. Kasteel Aldenghoor in Haelen is a medieval castle. The main building, dating from the 17th century, has two wings with hipped roofs; a black, round tower dating from the 15th or 16th century stands at the inner corner. It was built from brick and marl.
An oval defensive wall defines the appearance of Kasteel Horn. It dates mainly from the 15th and 16th centuries and also includes remains from the 14th century. The ancestral castle of the Lords of Horn is well preserved; an attractive park with walking paths surrounds it. Three cycling routes on the theme of “Rijke Roomse Leven” pass through Leudal and bring the municipality’s Catholic heritage to life. Hiking, architectural history and regional culture therefore offer different ways to shape your trip.
