Horn: History and Routes
Accommodation in Horn
Horn combines the history of mills, churches and monasteries with that of a medieval castle. For outdoor activities, you can include a walking route through natural areas and past places of cultural significance, as well as a cycling route by Kasteel Horn, in your travel plans. This lets you focus on cultural history and outdoor activity in different ways.
Mill, church and castle
The De Welvaart windmill was built on the commission of Joseph Aerts. Aerts had previously received permission in 1864 to build a windmill in the hamlet of Sanenkamp near Horn. The mill’s construction is therefore associated with a named commissioner and a specific location.
Two construction phases should be distinguished at St. Martin’s Church. When its Romanesque predecessor was demolished in 1838, two Roman altars dedicated to Mercurius Arvernus and Mars Halamardus were found. The present St. Martin’s Church was built in 1936 to a design by architect Stefan Dings. The find belongs to the history of the predecessor building; the year 1936 marks the construction of the present church.
Kasteel Horn is one of the oldest surviving medieval curtain-wall castles in the Netherlands. The castle adds a medieval structure to Horn’s cultural history. It is also a landmark on both the walking and cycling routes, which pass by Kasteel Horn.
Monastery and local places of remembrance
The “Blue Sisters” opened the Heilig Hart van Maria monastery in Horn in 1912. After the sisters left Horn in 1985, the monastery became a hotel. This sequence traces its history from the opening of the monastery, through the sisters’ departure, to its later use as a hotel.
The Heilig Hartbeeld was dedicated to the Blue Sisters in gratitude from the villagers. During the 1918 Spanish flu, Sister Betha cared for the sick and dying in the village. After the girls’ school was demolished, the statue was eventually placed in the cemetery’s auditorium. Its dedication, the reason for it and the history of its location offer different insights into the statue’s story.
The Wegkruis Horn stands at a crossroads of old roads, some of which are Roman. It was the last cross on the road to the more distant Galgenberg execution site of the County of Horne. Its history thus connects a point along the road with the historic route to a place beyond the crossroads.
Walking and cycling
Knopenlopen: Horn is a 12 km walking route in the KnopenLopen network of the municipality of Leudal. It starts at the information board on Raadhuisplein and passes places of cultural significance as well as natural areas in and around Horn. The route also passes Kasteel Horn. A walk through the castle park is recommended.
The Rondje Maasplassen cycling route is 39.6 km long and also passes Kasteel Horn. The two routes therefore share a landmark but differ in activity and distance: 12 km on foot compared with 39.6 km by bike. Check the cycling route details before setting off.
