Baexem – Castles, Mills and History
Accommodation in Baexem
When looking for a hotel in Baexem, you can use the town’s themes as a guide when planning your trip. Its architectural history is reflected in Kasteel Baexem and Huize De Brias; there is also a former monastery complex, a windmill and archaeological traces. For activities, you can also compare a 6.2-kilometre hiking route and a 41.3-kilometre cycling loop by distance.
Castles and Monastery Complexes
The U-shaped Kasteel Baexem was built in 1676. It may have been built to replace the former castle De Borg, which was located 400 metres to the southeast. Excavations revealed that the former Kasteel Baexem consisted of a large donjon; its foundations lie beneath the east end of the present building. A signet ring dating from before 1293, belonging to the knight Lenvalus van Baexem, was also found at Kasteel Baexem. Thus, the construction date of the present castle, a possible history involving De Borg, and archaeological evidence are all part of the picture, although they do not refer to the same period.
Huize De Brias is a rectangular brick building with pilasters and a hipped roof. Pilasters are flat, pillar-like features on a façade; a hipped roof also has sloping roof surfaces at the shorter ends. The building bears the anchor-year inscription 1717. In addition, the main structure of the rectangular moat enclosure from the 18th century is still intact. This brings the building’s design and a surviving feature of the moat enclosure into view as distinct aspects of its history.
The former Exaten monastery in Baexem comprises several monastery buildings and a monastery chapel. The buildings have cultural and historical value as a distinctive expression of cultural, spiritual and typological development. The former monastery has been listed as a Rijksmonument since 6 November 2001.
Mills, Archaeological Sites and Memorials
The Auroramolen is a post mill—a type of windmill considered the oldest windmill type in the Netherlands. Its history dates back to around 1520. At Baronsberg, a viewpoint in the park of nearby Kasteel Baexem, a German monk from nearby Exaten established a grotto dedicated to Mary on the hillside in 1878.
The names De Klockeberg and Klockenberg refer to different places. At the archaeological site of De Klockeberg, the Archeo Route Limburg app offers an on-site experience featuring a virtual archaeologist. Klockenberg Park, by contrast, occupies the site of Baexem’s former Romanesque church, which dates from the 13th century. The church was destroyed by the occupying forces in November 1944.
The Donald Barret Monument in Baexem commemorates Donald Barret and all the other British soldiers. Every year on King’s Day, the Sint Jan shooting guild lays flowers there. If you plan your trip specifically around this date, ask locally about how the tradition takes place.
Walking, Cycling and Former Transport Routes
The Knopenlopen Baexem walking route passes through Baexem and the surrounding area; it is 6.2 kilometres long. It starts at the Knopen-Lopen sign on Lindelaan, near the car park of De Oude Smids restaurant. The 41.3-kilometre Leudal Zuid cycling route is a circular tour through Nunhem, Neer, Buggenum, Haelen, Horn, Grathem and Baexem. The distances show a clear difference between the two routes: the walking route is the shorter option, while the cycling loop covers a considerably longer distance. You can therefore choose a tour based first on its format and stated distance.
Former transport routes are also part of the town’s history. The tramway in Baexem was part of the Deurne–Roermond tram line, operated in Limburg by De Limburgse Tramweg Maatschappij. The former station site recalls a station building erected in 1879, where travellers waited for the signal announcing approaching steam trains.
As of 1 January 2025, St John the Baptist Church in Baexem was no longer used for worship. At that time, work was under way to find a suitable new use for the building. If you plan to visit the church, check its current use and access arrangements in advance.
