For a stay in Heythuysen, historic buildings, local art and nature trails offer different ways to plan your visit. Sint Nicolaaskerk and the adjacent Missiekapel are in the centre. Other sights include the artwork on Dorpstraat and Sint Antoniusmolen. Nearby are Leudal and De Beylshof; hiking and cycling routes pass through the town and the region.

Church, Chapel and Art

The Late Gothic Sint Nicolaaskerk was built after 1504 as a three-aisled hall church. The choir and central nave feature decorative vault paintings dating from 1507. “Three-aisled” describes the division into three naves, while “hall church” refers to the building’s architectural form. Daily opening hours of 10:00 to 17:00 are listed for the side portal of Sint Nicolaaskerk during the summer months. Check these hours before visiting.

Missiekapel stands in the centre of Heythuysen next to the church and was built in 1850 or 1851. It is currently used as an exhibition space for performance art under the name “Kunsttempel Leudal”. If you plan to visit for an exhibition, check the exhibition details before setting out.

The artwork “De Eiffeltoren in de Dorpstraat” has adorned Dorpstraat since July 2023. Including its Corten steel base, it is 2.5 metres tall. Sint Antoniusmolen is a grain mill dating from 1861 and a typical post mill built on an artificial mound. Alongside church architecture, street art and mill construction offer different cultural themes to explore.

Leudal and the Surrounding Area

The Leudal nature area lies nearby, between Heythuysen and Neer. In the wider region, a large part of Leudal is designated as a Natura 2000 site. De Beylshof lies south of the town, on the Tungelroyse Beek. The nature attractions therefore differ in location: for Leudal, its position between Heythuysen and Neer and its regional protected-area designation are relevant; for De Beylshof, its location south of the town by the stream is notable.

Hiking and Cycling

The 6 km “Knopenlopen: Heythuysen Langs Cultuur en grafheuvels” walking route starts at the former town hall in the centre, passes through the south and southeast of the village, and returns to the starting point. This clearly distinguishes it from the longer cycling routes. Check the route before setting out, as route details may change.

The 37.5 km “Heythuyser” cycling route passes through Heythuysen, Leveroy, Baexem and Horn, as well as the Leudal nature area. The 35 km “De Rijke Historie van Leudal” route starts at Sint Nicolaaskerk in Heythuysen, passes Missiekapel and returns to Heythuysen via the Grafheuvels. Heythuyser connects several place names with the nature area; the shorter of the two cycling routes sets its start point and course around cultural and landscape features. You can compare the routes by both length and the destinations listed. Check the route information before cycling.

Boscafé De Busjop

Boscafé De Busjop is in Heythuysen, on the edge of Leudal, and serves as a starting point for hiking and cycling routes. After a hike, visitors can enjoy a variety of dishes there. This adds a place to eat to the cultural and natural attractions mentioned for your stay.
