Klimmen: Hiking Trails and Historical Traces
Accommodation in Klimmen
Klimmen offers several different starting points for planning a trip: hiking trails, archaeological traces, and historic buildings. If you are looking for a hotel in Klimmen, first consider whether scenery, a challenging route, or history should shape your stay. The trails and sights offer different highlights and can be grouped according to these interests.
Hiking in Klimmen
Rondje Klimmen V4 passes through an area with sparkling streams and rustling trees. The streams and trees shape the scenery along this hike and bring nature to the fore. If you pay attention to specific features of the surroundings when choosing a route, you can assess this tour by its natural character.
The Overhekerhof route V1 is challenging, with many ups and downs, and offers sweeping views. It leads to the Kluis, the historic dwelling of hermits. This brings together a clearly defined level of difficulty and a historical connection on one route: its character is shaped not only by the trail but also by its destination.
The Buitengebied Klimmen V2 hiking route passes the Krekelsbos, which has distinctive vegetation, and is also easily accessible from Klimmen-Ransdaal station. This gives you specific points of comparison for the three routes: Rondje Klimmen V4 stands out for its streams and trees, Overhekerhof route V1 for its ups and downs and sweeping views, and Buitengebied Klimmen V2 for the Krekelsbos and access from the station. You can compare the routes based on their different landscape and trail features.
Archaeology and Historic Buildings
At the Vindplaats Klimmen – Romeins Voerendaal, you can experience archaeological history with an app and the virtual archaeologist Archie. Klimmen is also situated on the old Roman military road Via Belgica. This brings together an app-based experience of archaeological history and a direct connection to the historic road.
The Heilige Remigius Kerk was first mentioned in 1145 and features an early medieval Romanesque style. It is a Rijksmonument and stands at Klimmen’s highest point. The church in Klimmen may have been built on the foundations of a Roman watch post. The Sint-Remigiuskerk is partly built from locally sourced Kunradersteen. The architectural style and material offer two different points of reference: the style classifies the architecture, while the stone identifies the local building material used.
Klimmen-Ransdaal station also combines access to a hiking route with its own architectural history: the Buitengebied Klimmen V2 route is easily accessible from the station. The station building was constructed in 1913 in a traditional style, based on a design by architect G.W. van Heukelom. Its interior is almost entirely intact; the two waiting rooms and the ticket office are considered worthy of protection. This allows you to appreciate the station both as a starting point for the hiking route and for its architecture and preserved interiors.
