Roermond can be explored from different perspectives: the Maasplassen represent water and landscape, while churches, museums and historic trails tell the story of the town’s long history. There are also routes of varying lengths for walking and cycling. Which themes you include in your trip depends on whether you would rather focus on culture, outdoor activities or a combination of both.

Culture and architectural history in Roermond

The Cuypershuis is located in the former home and workplace of architect and designer Pierre Cuypers. Its permanent exhibition shows how he won and carried out major commissions. Historic images, letters, an introductory film, audio stations and interactive elements present the subject; the exhibition may change over time.

Several churches also offer insight into different chapters of the town’s history. The history of the Carolus Chapel dates back to 1369. The monastery church, chapter house, refectory, cloister and kitchen building have survived from the original monastery. Right next to the chapel is the walled De Kartuis city park in the center of Roermond.

Construction of the present-day Sint Christoffelkathedraal as a new parish church began around 1410. Its furnishings include sculptures, paintings and liturgical vessels of cultural and historical significance, including a sacrament altar from 1593 and a Marian altar from 1890. Since 1957, a golden statue of Saint Christopher carrying Jesus on his shoulders has stood atop the 86-meter-high tower; it is popularly known as “Sjtuf.” The Munsterkerk was built at the beginning of the 13th century as a monastery church for the female abbey community of the Cistercian order in Roermond. Beneath its dome is the tomb of Gerard van Gelre and Margaretha van Brabant, considered Europe’s oldest tomb monument depicting a married couple.

The Minderbroederskerk combines a cultural program with seasonal opportunities to visit: organ and other concerts, choir performances and exhibitions are regularly held there. In summer, the church is open to the public on set days. As programs and visiting times may change, check the latest information before your trip. The religious heritage also includes the Kruiswegpark, with Stations of the Cross, a Calvary and a processional route dedicated to the veneration of Mary.

Waterscapes and outdoor trails

The Maasplassen cover more than 3,000 hectares and are considered the largest contiguous watersports area in the Netherlands. They were created through gravel extraction; today, their landscape includes flower-rich banks, waterbirds, and grazing Galloway cattle and Konik horses. The Maasplassen are located mostly in Maasgouw and Roermond. Boating, stand-up paddleboarding and swimming are possible there; conditions may vary by location.

For walks and hikes, the municipality of Roermond has hiking junctions with well-marked routes and clear signposting to help you find your way. The six-kilometer “Struinen door Asselt & De Weerd” route leads from historic Asselt along the Maas and through the rugged greenery of De Weerd. Its unpaved boot trail runs over wet ground and past banks where waterbirds can be found among the reeds. As trail conditions may change seasonally, this description also provides practical guidance for planning your outing.

A shorter route with a stronger historical focus is the 2.1-kilometer Roermond–Kapellerkwartier archaeological walking route. It explores the history around Kapel in het Zand, the Kruiswegpark and the Oude Kerkhof. Information is available at 15 locations; the route also uses augmented reality and 3D elements, whose digital presentation may change. By comparison, the ten-kilometer walking route around Boukoul passes through the landscape of a church village on the Maas terraces of Limburg. From the middle Maas terrace, it offers views of the surrounding area; along the way, quiet roads alternate with unpaved trails through green countryside. The three routes therefore differ not only in length, but also in their focus: historic sites, riverbank landscapes or the surroundings of Boukoul.

There is also a network of bicycle junctions in and around Roermond to help cyclists find their way. It makes it easier to navigate the historic center and the surrounding area, as well as the church villages. The 30-kilometer Cuypersfietsroute “Het atelier van de architect” runs from Swalmen to Roermond. This offers a choice between a set, longer route and a larger network of trails.

For further views of the landscape, the Boesheide viewpoint offers a panoramic view of the Roermond-Oost nature area, which stretches from the town to the German border. De Meinweg National Park is about eight kilometers east of Roermond and forms part of the Maas-Schwalm-Nette Cross-Border Nature Park. Together with the trails and waterscape, these places offer different nature and activity options for planning your trip, without requiring you to settle on just one type of stay.
