Roermond combines a waterscape created by gravel extraction with museums, churches and historic sites. When planning your visit, you can focus on different things: time at the Maasplassen, a route on foot or by bike, and insights into buildings and the city’s history. If you’re looking for a hotel in Roermond, these themes can help you tailor your stay to your own interests.

The Maasplassen and Routes Around Roermond

The Maasplassen consist of several interconnected bodies of water created by gravel extraction and directly bordering the city of Roermond. They are therefore a network of bodies of water right by the city, not a single lake. Beginners and experienced athletes alike can wakeboard at the Beaver Creek Wake Park on the Maasplassen.

A boat tour on the Maasplassen lasts 70 minutes. It departs from Roermond city centre at the Roerkade. Before making plans, check whether the tour is available on your preferred date. This way, you can allow for the boat trip as a separate activity instead of equating its duration with the time needed for a route over land.

A varied walking route of about 12.5 kilometres connects Roermond’s historic centre with the Maasplassen, a ferry crossing and the Voorstad. If you plan this route, take the ferry timetable into account. The “Ontdekkingstocht Roermond” cycling route is longer, at 43.4 kilometres, and passes through Roermond and its surroundings. The two routes offer different ways to explore the city and its surroundings: one on foot, with a ferry crossing, and the other by bike. The stated distances make it easier to compare these options by route length.

Museums and Roermond’s Architectural History

At the Historiehuis Roermond, trade, changes in power, monasteries, art workshops and Christopher, the city’s oldest resident, are presented as interactive themes. The Cuypershuis has a different focus: it centres on the life and work of architect Pierre Cuypers. Individual visitors can join a 45-minute guided tour on Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. Check the current details before your trip. The Cuypershuis’s main entrance is wheelchair accessible; if this is important for your visit, confirm the current arrangements in advance.

Roermond’s churches also reflect different aspects of its history. The Munsterkerk was built in the early 13th century. Beneath its dome is the elaborate tomb of Count Gerard van Gelre and Margaretha van Brabant, considered Europe’s oldest tomb monument depicting a married couple. The Sint-Christoffelkathedraal is a Gothic cross-shaped basilica dating from 1410. Since 1957, a golden statue of Saint Christopher, carrying Jesus on his shoulders, has stood atop its 86-metre-high tower. Locals affectionately call the figure “Sjtuf”.

Another testament to the city’s history is the Rattentoren, one of the last remaining remnants of Roermond’s fortifications, dating from 1300. Inside the tower, you can see a model of Roermond as a medieval fortified town, at a scale of 1:25. The site thus showcases both a surviving section of the fortifications and a model that depicts the city in a broader historical context.

The Kruiswegpark was laid out in 1920 to a design by master builder Dr Pierre Cuypers (1827–1921). Three areas are connected there: a Way of the Cross with fourteen stations, a separate processional path with eight paintings of the image of Mary, and a central square at the foot of the Calvary. The exact number of stations and paintings makes the park’s layout clear without combining the separate paths into a single circuit.

The ECI hydroelectric power plant is part of Roermond’s industrial heritage. The facility, dating from 1920, has been restored; a modern hydroelectric power plant with an output of 250 kWe has also been installed. A historic facility and a modern addition thus stand side by side at the same site.
