Swalmen: Hiking, River Landscapes and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Swalmen
If you are looking for a hotel in Swalmen, you can plan your trip around the local highlights: the Pieterpad and other hiking trails, river landscapes in the Swalmdal, and historic sites in Swalmen and Asselt. The routes vary in length, course and scenery. This makes it possible to decide in advance whether a multi-stage hike, a circular walk or cultural history should shape your stay.
Trails: stages, circular walks and longer routes
The Pieterpad passes directly through Swalmen. Swalmen is also both the endpoint and starting point for two stages of the Pieterpad. A 4.8 km circular walk in the Swalmdal starts at Herberg de Bos in Swalmen. At 6 km, the “Struinen door Asselt & De Weerd” hiking route is longer: it leads from historic Asselt along the Meuse through the rugged greenery of De Weerd.
In the De Weerd section, a path follows a rugged boot trail right along the banks; water birds can be seen in the reeds. A walk in the Swalmdal leads from dry sandy soils through ancient forests into a damp, green stream valley. It passes over wooden walkways and by beaver tracks.
Longer tours also vary in their course and scenery. The 14.5 km Ruiterroute Boukoul en Swalmen follows many unpaved paths and country roads through forests and farmland around Boukoul and Swalmen. The 19.6 km Swalmdalroute is a circular route around Swalmen and Boukoul, passing, among other places, the Asseltse Plassen and the Bosberggebied. Cyclists can also take the 48 km “Op de pedalen door ’t Maas- en Swalmdal” cycling route, which passes the oldest little church in Swalmen.
River landscapes and nature
The Swalm is a fast-flowing, meandering tributary of the Meuse. Natural bends in the river can be seen around Groenewoud; along its Dutch course, the stream can still meander freely outside the villages. Badgers live in the Swalmdal, where they have built their setts; the area is a particularly valuable natural area.
The cross-border Grenspark Maas-Swalm-Nette nature area lies near Swalmen and stretches across the Netherlands and Germany. The park adds a regional perspective to the landscape, while the routes described focus on specific trails and landscape features.
Cultural heritage in Swalmen and Asselt
Kasteel Hillenraad is a Dutch national monument (Rijksmonument) in Swalmen. The St. Lambertus Church on the Mert in Swalmen dates from 1896. On the stone Church Bridge in Swalmen, a statue depicts John of Nepomuk.
In Asselt, the Romanesque single-nave church was built in the 10th century. At the archaeological site “Asselts verleden,” an app featuring the virtual archaeologist Archie tells the story of Asselt and explains the significance of the finds at the site. Asselt also has a Noormannenwandeling route; here, architectural history, archaeology and a dedicated route come together.
Another historic detail is the small landscaped garden at Raaystraat 3, known as a “doolhof” (maze) and covering about 1.5 hectares. It was probably laid out in the first half of the 19th century. Its approximate dating sets this example apart from the precisely dated buildings in Swalmen and Asselt.
