Herten: Church and Memorial Sites
Accommodation in Herten
Herten offers a range of starting points for planning your trip: the Michaëlkerk and two memorial sites in the town, as well as themes related to the Oolderplas, nature and water sports. If you are looking for a hotel in Herten, you can weigh these interests separately: local history and architecture offer a different focus from landscapes, animal grazing or a surfing course. The following highlights provide specific guidance for planning your stay.
Old Town Centre and Memorial Sites
The Michaëlkerk is located in Herten’s old town centre. It is an east-facing, brick-built cruciform basilica with a west tower. This brings together several architectural features: “cruciform basilica” describes the building’s form, brick its construction material, “east-facing” its orientation, and west tower the tower’s position. Those interested in architecture can use these features to understand the church in terms of form, material and orientation. Its location in the old town centre gives the building a clear connection to the heart of the town.
Herten’s history includes two different forms of commemoration. The Herteheym Monument commemorates 27 villagers who lost their lives in acts of war during the years of occupation. The war memorial is an expression of gratitude by the women Geurts, Helwegen and Roumen. Thus, collective remembrance of a group of residents stands alongside an expression of gratitude by three women named individually. If you are interested in local history, these two memorial sites offer distinct, specifically identified points of reference.
The Oolderplas and Seasonal Nature Themes
The Oolderplas also tells a story of the landscape that begins with the extraction of raw materials: it was created by dredging gravel, followed by the removal of river sand using suction dredgers. At its southwestern corner, it has an open connection to the Meuse. Its formation and river connection reveal two aspects of the water body: it is the result of sand and gravel extraction and is connected to the Meuse.
The Oolderplas is a wintering area for large numbers of waterbirds. Grazing on two willow beds also takes place during different periods. Galloways and Konik horses graze on Isabelle Griend all year round; on Oolder Griend, Galloways graze from April until winter. This distinguishes year-round grazing by two animal species from seasonal Galloway grazing. The waterbirds’ wintering period provides a separate seasonal focus for nature-related interests.
Water Sports and Practical Information
Course offerings and beach facilities are two different aspects of water sports: WSC Roermond offers surfing courses for beginners, while Windsurfcenter Roermond has its own 450-metre-long beach. The course is specifically intended for beginners; the beach information gives the length of a privately owned beach. If you are including water sports in your travel plans, you can distinguish between interest in a course and interest in the beach.
A specific address to help you plan is the Maasplassen P1 visitor car park at Maasstraat 31, 6049 CC Herten. As visitor facilities can change, check the parking information again before setting out.
