Quarto D’altino connects the history of ancient Altinum with the River Sile and several named routes. For your stay, you can focus on archaeology, the river landscape, or local history.

Altinum: port city and archaeological evidence

The ancient city of Altinum was located in the present-day settlement of Altino and was one of the most important ports in the northern Adriatic. Its urban structure included a forum with a basilica for public functions, temples, and numerous emporia—trading centers of the time. The forum, temples, and trading centers show the ancient city’s different functions: public affairs, religious buildings, and trade existed side by side.

The Museo Archeologico di Altino preserves archaeological finds from ancient Altinum and its necropolis. Its Roman and pre-Roman collections include Paleo-Venetic grave goods, which document the settlement’s development from the 7th to the 1st century BC. This time span offers a view of development over several centuries, not just a single period.

The Domus della Pantera is named after a black-and-white mosaic in the atrium depicting an animal drinking. In the 7th century, the inhabitants of Altino moved permanently to the island of Torcello; the bishop’s seat was also transferred there. Thus, Altino’s former importance as a port and the later relocation of its inhabitants and bishop’s seat belong to different historical periods. The historic Via Annia also passes through Quarto D’altino.

The Sile and routes through the river landscape

The 90-kilometer-long Sile crosses the entire municipal territory of Quarto D’altino. The river is a defining landscape feature of the municipality.

The Alzaia sul Fiume Sile is an unpaved cycling and walking path. It begins at the Musestre bridge near Quarto D’altino, follows the banks of the Sile, and ends at the Conca di Portegrandi. Both its course along the riverbank and its unpaved surface are relevant to understanding the route. The Percorso della Memoria also begins in Quarto D’altino and runs along Via Claudia Augusta to the Carmason pumping station. The two routes therefore differ in their described course and destination.

Boating, kayaking, and canoeing are possible from several landing points on the Sile. The lock gates of the Conca di Portegrandi were built between 1682 and 1684. The river landscape thus offers both possible trips on the water and a structure with a clearly defined historical period.

Other local sights and regional themes

The Ansa San Michele Vecchio is a wetland in a bend of the river on the right bank of the Sile, immediately northwest of the San Michele Vecchio district of Quarto D’altino. The river bend, the right bank, and the location relative to the district precisely situate this natural area.

The bell tower of the Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Michele is 56 meters high and has a cylindrical shaft in the Ravenna style. Its height and architectural form provide a specific architectural detail alongside Altinum’s archaeological themes. The Fagiolo Verdòn bean is also part of the region’s character: it is regarded as a rediscovered gastronomic heritage typical of the Quarto D’altino area.
