Portegrandi – Waterways, History and Nature
Accommodation in Portegrandi
Two themes shape how Portegrandi is seen: the history of the waterways between the Sile and the Venetian Lagoon, and the nature topics explored at the Centro di Educazione ambientale Airone. If you are planning a stay, these different focuses can help guide your choice of destination.
Locks, the Conca and waterways
The Conca di Portegrandi was built around 1680, when the final stretch of the Sile was diverted. In Portegrandi, a 17th-century lock separates the river from the Venetian Lagoon. The Conca therefore tells the story of the Sile’s diversion, while the lock tells a different chapter in the history of water engineering: the separation of river and lagoon.
The water landscape can also be understood through the Litoranea Veneta. This navigable waterway begins, among other places, at the lock in Portegrandi and runs east from there to the lock at Bevazzana in San Michele al Tagliamento. The description of the place thus connects a local structure with a longer water route; check the relevant conditions in advance before planning a specific trip.
You can also set out from the Porto Turistico di Portegrandi towards the Venetian Lagoon and reach the islands. This offers a different way of experiencing the area than exploring its history on land: one perspective follows the waterways, while the other focuses on how they came into being and how they were used. A boat trip is not the same as a visit to the exhibitions at the Centro Airone.
Centro Airone: Habitats and birdlife
The Centro di Educazione ambientale Airone di Portegrandi has an educational room and a large exhibition room. The educational room presents both the river environment of the Sile and the lagoon environment of the Venetian Lagoon. The two rooms therefore serve different purposes within the centre.
The large exhibition room displays specimens of fauna found in the area, including birds and reptiles. Panels introduce local habitats and also cover the breeding, care, protection and conservation of local, migratory and exotic bird species. Those particularly interested in birdlife and habitats will find a natural history focus here; the exhibits also cover a range of different topics.
The Centro Airone’s visitor offer includes an additional 30-minute visit to the Conca di Portegrandi. If you would like to include this, confirm the booking details in advance. Advance reservations are required to visit the centre, so arrange your visit ahead of time rather than assuming you can enter spontaneously.
Getting here and finding your way around
The Portegrandi bus stop is just a few minutes’ walk from the centre. It is served by the ATVO 25A and MOM 108 intercity bus routes. If you are travelling by bus, check the timetable for your specific travel date. Plan your onward connection separately.
Portegrandi’s centre is at street level and has no architectural barriers. This local feature may be relevant when choosing where to stay and finding your way around. Together with its historic water engineering structures, the nature topics at the Centro Airone and the option of a trip towards the lagoon, it gives a clear impression of the different aspects that make up Portegrandi. When planning your trip, choose the focus that matters to you, and arrange visits requiring reservations and specific journeys in advance.
