Cavallino: Cycling Routes, Lagoon and History
Accommodation in Cavallino
Cavallino combines cycling routes along and over the lagoon with a history of hydraulic engineering, a church with significant works of art, and a weekly market. For planning your trip, the specific routes, history and landscape offer different points of interest. Piazza Santa Maria Elisabetta is a central starting point for Via del Casson and also features a panoramic terrace overlooking the lagoon.
Cycling Routes and Paths Along the Canal
The elevated cycle path on Via Pordelio, also known as “La Via del Respiro,” stretches for seven kilometres directly over the Venetian Lagoon and connects Cavallino with Punta Sabbioni. By comparison, a section of the cycle path about 400 metres long, built over the lagoon waters, connects Piazza Santa Maria Elisabetta with Via della Marinona. A municipal notice dated 31 January 2025 describes this section; check the current condition of the infrastructure when planning your trip.
Via del Casson starts at Piazza Santa Maria Elisabetta in the centre of Cavallino and runs alongside the canal of the same name. You can follow it on foot or by bicycle. The central starting point and the course of the canal are important landmarks along this route; it is also suitable for both walking and cycling.
Hydraulic Engineering History and Culture
The Porte del Cavallino hydraulic locks were built in 1632 to connect the Venetian Lagoon with the Piave River (now the Sile). The lock complex regulated the water level between the Casson Canal and the Sile, thereby allowing boats to pass through. Two bodies of water are relevant here: the connection describes the purpose of the construction, while regulation between the Casson and the Sile explains the function of the lock complex.
The Chiesa di Santa Maria Elisabetta in Cavallino-Treporti has a history dating back to the 18th century; traces of a religious building were already documented in 1591. Among the significant works of art preserved in the church is an altarpiece attributed to Antonio Balestra. Its history and art therefore offer different ways to explore this cultural landmark.
Piazza and Weekly Market
Piazza Santa Maria Elisabetta features a panoramic terrace overlooking the lagoon. The terrace is part of the square’s most recent redesign.
Cavallino’s weekly market takes place every Tuesday. It offers fresh produce, cheese, cured meats, clothing and handicrafts. The range includes food as well as clothing and handcrafted goods; Tuesday is the regular market day to plan your visit around.
Landscape Along Via della Marinona
Via della Marinona is lined with cultivated fields, reed beds and lagoon salt marshes with sea lavender. Along the road, you will find agricultural land as well as reeds and salt marshes. Sea lavender adds a specific plant feature to the description of the salt marshes, bringing a natural accent alongside the cycling routes and hydraulic engineering history.
