Rovigo combines distinctive architectural history and art collections with routes and landscapes that extend beyond the city into the Province of Rovigo. When planning a trip, you can choose between cultural sites in the city and nature and cultural experiences across the province. Options range from churches, palaces and museums to routes to explore on foot, by bicycle or as a bike-and-boat trip.

Architecture and the history of the city

One of Rovigo’s landmarks is the Tempio della Beata Vergine del Soccorso, usually called La Rotonda. Its octagonal floor plan gives the building its distinctive appearance. Francesco Zamberlan designed the church; its foundation stone was laid on October 13, 1594. The 57-metre-high bell tower is a separate building phase: it was built in 1773 by Baldassarre Longhena. The Torre Donà is another striking landmark. About 60 metres high, it is one of Italy’s significant early medieval towers.

Other buildings tell the story of different periods in the city’s history. The San Bartolomeo architectural complex dates back to the 13th century and reached its peak after the Olivetan monastery was expanded in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Palazzo Roverella was built from 1474 on the commission of Cardinal Bartolomeo Roverella; the building is traditionally attributed to craftsmen from Ferrara associated with the architect Biagio Rossetti. Since 2016, the Palazzo Roncale, built between 1550 and 1562 to a design by Michele Sanmicheli, has hosted changing exhibitions highlighting the area’s artistic and cultural features.

The city’s former fortifications and gates can also be traced through individual surviving structures. Porta San Bartolomeo is one of the three gates in the original 14th-century city walls. Porta Sant’Agostino is one of the last two gates in the medieval walls and probably dates from the first half of the 16th century. If you would like to explore architecture beyond individual buildings, consider the Percorso delle Mura Antiche: it takes about 60 minutes on foot or about 25 minutes by bicycle. The urban route Tra Piazze e Palazzi leads through Rovigo’s historic centre.

Art, collections and performing arts

The Accademia dei Concordi makes a library of more than 300,000 documents available to the public. Its picture gallery comprises more than 400 works; its archaeological section includes the collection of Camillo Silvestri and the Egyptian collection of Giuseppe Valsè Pantellini. The Palazzo Roverella houses the picture gallery collection as well as changing art and photography exhibitions. If you would like to combine different kinds of cultural offerings, these collections complement the changing exhibitions at the Palazzo Roncale.

The Museo dei Grandi Fiumi presents the archaeological, cultural and landscape heritage of Polesine, a region shaped by the Po and Adige rivers. Original artefacts are displayed alongside interactive reproductions, scenographic installations, multimedia exhibits, dioramas and models. The historic Teatro Sociale offers a different way to enjoy the cultural programme: its seasons include opera, drama, dance, symphonic music, chamber music and jazz. Programmes change from season to season; check the current schedule before planning a visit.

Routes and landscapes across the province

Routes vary in duration, mode of transport and surface. The Percorso delle Mura Antiche gives you a quick idea of how long a route takes and can be completed on foot or by bicycle. I luoghi degli Olivetani, by contrast, is a 25-kilometre circular route. It runs partly along a cycle path, partly on paved roads that carry some traffic, and partly on unpaved tracks. These details can help you take the route conditions into account when planning, without treating the tours as interchangeable.

La Via dell’Archeologia is a bike-and-boat route from Rovigo to Adria. It leads from the former Olivetan monastery of San Bartolomeo to a landing stage, then continues by boat along the Canalbianco to Adria. Dates and operators may change, so check in advance whether the route is available during your travel dates. La Via dell’Acqua is a nature-focused bike-and-boat route. Near Trecenta, it passes the Gorghi, the remains of old river courses that are now protected wetlands. The return journey follows the river to the Mulino Pizzon, an example of industrial archaeology.

The Po Delta landscape in the Province of Rovigo includes fossil dunes, raised embankments, river floodplains, fishing valleys, lagoons and newly formed sandbanks. In the Parco del Delta del Po, you can take bicycle trips along the embankments, go on boat and canoe trips, watch birds and take nature photographs. Along the stretch from Porto Levante to the Po di Maistra, there are observation towers and viewing points; a site managed by Veneto Agricoltura also has an observation tower.
