Rovigo Between Art and Architecture
Accommodation in Rovigo
Art collections, historic architecture and cycling routes offer different ways to enjoy your stay in Rovigo. The historic city centre is easy to explore on foot or by bike. The cultural attractions range from painting collections and archaeological exhibitions to buildings and theatre performances; the cycling routes also differ in length and course.
Art Collections and Regional History
Palazzo Roverella houses the collections of the Accademia dei Concordi Picture Gallery and the Episcopal Seminary of Rovigo, as well as temporary art and photography exhibitions. Construction of the building began in 1474, and it retains original decorative features of Renaissance architecture. The Accademia dei Concordi Picture Gallery contains more than 400 works. The Accademia itself was founded in 1580 at the initiative of Count Gaspare Campo.
The picture gallery in Palazzo Roverella presents paintings spanning seven centuries: from the Gothic period and 16th- and 17th-century Venetian painting to works by prominent 18th-century Venetian painters. The collection thus covers several successive periods. The palazzo connects this history of art with its own architectural history and also hosts temporary exhibitions.
The Museo dei Grandi Fiumi focuses on the archaeological, cultural and ecological heritage of Polesine, a region shaped by the Po and Adige rivers. Its exhibition features original artefacts dating from the 2nd millennium BC to the beginning of the modern era. Interactive reproductions, scenographic displays, multimedia installations, dioramas and models complement the exhibits. The museum also includes a Roman lapidarium outdoors and the new “Il Museo in Scena” hall, dedicated to Gabbris Ferrari, an artist, director and set designer from Rovigo.
Buildings and Theatre
Rovigo’s architectural history can be seen in buildings of many different kinds. Torre Donà is around 60 metres high and is considered one of Italy’s most important early medieval towers. Palazzo Roncale was built between 1550 and 1562 to a design by the Veronese architect Michele Sanmicheli. The San Bartolomeo architectural complex dates back to the 13th century and reached its greatest splendour in the 16th and 17th centuries, when the Olivetan monastery was expanded.
La Rotonda is known for its octagonal floor plan. The interior features Baroque canvases, including works by Francesco Maffei and Antonio Zanchi. The bell tower is 57 metres high and was built by Baldassarre Longhena in 1773. The floor plan, interior decoration and tower each make their own architectural statement.
The Teatro Sociale was built from 1817 in the Neoclassical style, to a design by Sante Baseggio, an architect from Rovigo. Following a fire in 1902, it was rebuilt in 1904. Its pictorial decorations were among the Veneto’s early examples of the new design principles of the Liberty style. Since 1967, the Teatro Sociale has been the only Teatro di tradizione in Polesine. Its programme includes opera, drama, dance and children’s theatre, as well as seasons of symphonic music, chamber music and jazz.
A guided tour of the Teatro Sociale lasts about an hour and a half and includes the auditorium, the Ridotto and the stage. It must be booked in advance; available dates depend on performances and rehearsals. Check the options in advance if the tour is part of your plans.
Historic City Centre and Cycling Routes
The historic city centre can be reached from the FS railway station and the surrounding car parks, and is easy to explore on foot or by bike. Various route descriptions are available to help you plan longer rides. The Anello di Rovigo is a 71.2-kilometre circular cycling route along the Adige and the Canal Bianco towards the Adriatic.
I luoghi degli Olivetani is a 25-kilometre circular route and is completely flat. It follows cycle paths in some sections, paved roads—which are sometimes busy—in others, and unpaved paths in others. Its length and surface distinguish it from the Anello di Rovigo; check the route details before setting off. La Via dell'Archeologia, meanwhile, is a Bike & Boat route from Rovigo to Adria, offering another, differently designed way to combine a cycling trip with a named destination.
