You can get to know Taglio Di Po through a range of themes: the history of the river diversion, early buildings, local commemorations and ways to explore the Po. This lets you focus on historic traces, recurring traditions and riverside activities according to your travel interests.

River History and Buildings

The name Taglio di Po recalls a major hydraulic engineering project carried out by the Republic of Venice. Between 1600 and 1604, it diverted the Po to protect the Venetian Lagoon from silting up. This history links the town to a specific intervention in the river’s course and to the aim at the time of preserving the lagoon. Buildings and later industrial archaeology offer further themes alongside this history.

The parish church of Taglio di Po was one of the town’s first buildings and has a bell tower. Villa Zeno, also known as Ca' Zen, was built around the middle of the 18th century near the Po embankment. The two buildings offer different historical reference points: the church is notable for its early place in the town, while the villa is notable for its approximate date of construction and its connection to the embankment.

The Ca' Vendramin pumping station is considered one of the most significant examples of industrial archaeology in the Po Delta. Construction began in 1900, was completed in 1903, and the facility was inspected and approved in 1905. These three dates mark the start of construction, its completion and the approval; compared with the diversion of 1600–1604, they show a much later phase in the history of water engineering. Ca' Vendramin can be reached from Taglio di Po via the park route.

Local Traditions and Annual Events

Every year on September 16, Taglio di Po commemorates the Taglio di Porto Viro. The commemoration includes the Palio d’la Cariola, a wheelbarrow race in historic costumes. Another annual tradition is the Madonna del Vaiolo, celebrated on January 27 with a solemn procession at the Church of San Francesco d’Assisi. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these dates, check the event details for the relevant year.

Explore the Po in Different Ways

From Taglio di Po, you can explore the great river on foot, by bicycle or in small boats. If you prefer to stay on land, you can choose between walking and cycling; small boats offer a view from the water. The options therefore differ mainly in how you get around and in the perspective they offer on the river.

A Regional Connection: Riso del Delta del Po IGP

Riso del Delta del Po IGP is grown in areas of Veneto and Emilia-Romagna shaped by deposits from the Po. Its entire production cycle, from sowing to packaging, takes place within the Po Delta. The product therefore has an explicitly regional connection, encompassing both regions and the full production process. For travelers, this theme broadens the picture of the Delta to include food production, alongside river history, buildings and local traditions.
