Cavanella Po: VENTO and the history of water engineering
Accommodation in Cavanella Po
The VENTO cycle route and the history of water engineering give Cavanella Po two clearly distinct thematic perspectives. The Antiquarium di Loreo adds an archaeological perspective. If you are planning a stay, you can explore a long-distance cycle route, historic interventions on the Po, and finds from a Roman villa. These topics tell different stories: the cycle route describes a connection over longer distances, while Taglio di Porto Viro and Idrovora Cavanella Po are specific water-engineering structures.
VENTO cycle route: local section and long-distance route
A section of the VENTO cycle route was inaugurated in Cavanella Po in June 2025. VENTO is a long-distance cycle route from Turin to the Adriatic and Venice; for the most part, it follows the course of the Po. This places the locally named section within a route whose reference points are far apart. The inauguration marks a specific historical event, while the name VENTO refers to the long-distance cycle route as a whole. Check route conditions before setting out.
According to a regional resolution published in 2024, VENTO includes functional section III, Lot A, from Loreo via Via Cavanella Po to Porto Viro. This information supplements the announcement of the inauguration with a specific route: Loreo and Porto Viro are the named endpoints, and Via Cavanella Po is identified along the way. Alongside the wider route from Turin to the Adriatic and Venice, there is therefore a section with its own place names.
Travel by bus
Busitalia route E602 connects Adria and Ariano Ferrarese and has a branch to Cavanella Po. The timetable is valid from June 7, 2026; check the times before travelling. This lets you factor the bus connection into your travel plans separately from information about the cycle route.
The history of water engineering on the Po
The historic Taglio di Porto Viro takes you back to an earlier intervention in the course of the river. It was created in 1604 to protect the Venetian Lagoon from the substantial sediment deposits carried by the northern branches of the Po. An artificial canal about seven kilometres long was built for the Taglio, diverting the waters of the Po from Cavanella Po (Porto di Loreo) to the Sacca di Goro. The approximate length indicates the scale of the canal; its described course connects Cavanella Po with the Sacca di Goro. Its purpose and course place the structure within the history of water management on the Po.
Idrovora Cavanella Po marks a much later point in time: it was built in 1969. The building is 48 metres long and was equipped with eight electric pumps when it was constructed. Compared with the canal built in 1604, these are two different structures: one is an artificial canal intended to protect the lagoon, while the other is a pumping station with a specified building length and number of pumps. This comparison helps show that the history of water engineering is not limited to a single project.
Archaeology at the Antiquarium di Loreo
The Antiquarium di Loreo offers an archaeological focus. It displays finds from excavations at the Roman villa of Corte Cavanella. This is a different emphasis from canals and pumps: the focus here is not water management or building dimensions, but archaeological finds and their connection to a named Roman villa. When weighing up your interests, you can distinguish between the long-distance cycle route, water engineering, and archaeology, rather than treating all the information as a single activity.
