When looking for a hotel in Occhiobello, you can first get a sense of the destination through three themes: the river landscape along the Po, architectural history and local food culture. These themes lead from the vast green floodplain to church and villa architecture, and on to regional specialties and events held on specific dates.

The Po Floodplain and Getting Your Bearings

Parco della Rotta is a large green floodplain right beside the Po River. It can be reached via the riverside road and gives the town’s connection to the river a tangible form. The park and river landscape thus provide a distinct nature-focused area within the destination; Route GT 4 describes the Po area from a broader geographical perspective.

Route GT 4 runs along the Venetian bank of the Po, beside a broad floodplain. After passing the railway, road and motorway bridges over the Po, it enters the municipality of Occhiobello, passes through Santa Maria Maddalena and then reaches the town centre of Occhiobello. To get a sense of the destination’s location, this sequence shows the transition from the riverbank and expansive floodplain to a route through the town.

Architecture and Remembrance

The present-day Chiesa di Santa Maria Maddalena and its bell tower were rebuilt between 1952 and 1955 to designs by architect Giovanni Battista Scarpari and engineer Oscar Marin of Adria. This period gives the building a clear historical context. The bell tower was also part of this reconstruction; Scarpari and Marin are named as its designers, one an architect and the other an engineer.

Villa Savonarola reflects a different architectural tradition. In general, it is characteristic of the rural settlement patterns of Alto Medio Polesine. Its elements are partly joined together and partly separate. Together, these features describe both the connections and the distinct parts of the architectural complex, while also broadly placing the villa within a regionally named rural settlement pattern.

November 14, 1951, is also part of local remembrance: in Occhiobello, it marks the anniversary of the flood in Polesine and is a day of remembrance for the victims swept away by the floodwaters. Alongside the architectural themes, this date provides a specific historical point of reference.

Regional Cuisine and Events

Local gastronomic specialties include cappelletti, cappellacci with pumpkin, garlic salami and salama da sugo. The traditional bread of Occhiobello and Santa Maria Maddalena is called la ciupeta. These names give you specific points of reference for the regional food culture without grouping the different specialties into a single dish.

At the Sagra di San Lorenzo, food stalls served first and second courses, sandwiches, piadine, hamburgers, side dishes and desserts from August 8 to 14, 2026. The program also included music, performances and dancing. The Ente Palio San Lorenzo Occhiobello group performed with musicians and flag throwers.

The Fiera di Santa Maria Maddalena brought performances, music and entertainment to Piazza Maggiore from July 11 to 22, 2025. On Saturday, July 4, 2026, the 48th edition of “In sla rota ad Po – Summer Edition” brought cycling enthusiasts to the same piazza. These events mark different occasions and refer to their respective years.
