Santa Venerina: Viticulture, Heritage and Nature
Accommodation in Santa Venerina
Santa Venerina brings together a history of viticulture, religious and rural heritage, and a distinctive Mediterranean landscape. If you’re looking for a hotel in Santa Venerina, these themes can help you choose a place that suits your travel interests. They range from the land’s former uses and historic churches to species-rich Mediterranean scrub.
Viticulture, Landscape and Local History
Viticulture has transformed the landscape: forests were turned into vineyards laid out on terraces and supported by dry-stone walls made of lava stone. These terraces make the connection between farming and the terrain easy to see. The historic distilling industry is also linked to viticulture. It began around 1850, using by-products from wine processing. Viticulture and distilling are therefore not separate themes: their history encompasses both the creation of the vineyards and the reuse of the materials left over from processing.
The historic wine and food festival EnoEtna was founded in 1997. It is dedicated to Etna DOC wines, spirits, local products and crafts. If you’d like to plan your stay around the festival, check the latest dates and program before arranging your trip.
Museums and Sacred Architecture
The Museo del Palmento is housed in a private manor house dating from 1850. It displays tools and objects that document rural and domestic life in past centuries. The collection thus focuses not only on viticulture and farming, but also on everyday life. Tools and household items bring different aspects of these ways of life into focus.
The Chiesa Madre di Santa Venera in Santa Venerina reopened in October 2025 after seven years of closure. A different period in history is represented by the Chiesa di Maria Santissima del Carmelo e delle Anime Purganti in Bongiardo, which is associated with construction and significant renovation or expansion phases between 1723 and 1847. The church’s recent reopening thus stands alongside a building and renovation timeline spanning more than a century.
The Eremo di Santo Stefano is located in Dagala del Re, a hamlet of Santa Venerina. It is considered one of the very few Byzantine churches in Sicily with a three-apsed layout. This architectural classification gives the hamlet a distinctive connection to the island’s Byzantine architectural history.
Mediterranean Scrub and Wine Tastings
The Parco Oasi di Cosentini covers almost five hectares and is one of the few remaining sections of the Bosco di Aci. Its species-rich Mediterranean scrub is characterized by oaks, holm oaks, ash trees, hornbeams, turpentine trees and wild olive trees. Unlike the terraced vineyards, the focus here is on the remaining woodland. The two themes show different sides of the landscape: its transformation for agriculture and the survival of Mediterranean scrub.
In recent years, the Parco Oasi di Cosentini has been open to visitors all day from Friday to Sunday. Check the latest opening hours before planning your visit.
At Murgo in Santa Venerina, guided tastings of five or seven wines and sparkling wines are available by reservation. Both options include a guided cellar tour and local products. The number of wines distinguishes the two formats, while the cellar tour and local products are included in both. Reservations are required.
