Ragalna: Volcanic Landscapes, Trails and Local Culture
Accommodation in Ragalna
Ragalna combines religious buildings in the town with trails and landscapes on Mount Etna. Choosing your destination is about more than a single attraction: you can focus on hiking, observing nature, astronomy or culinary traditions. The places and topics here give you a starting point for considering which aspects of Ragalna suit your stay.
Hiking between the town and volcanic landscapes
Sentiero 785 connects the built-up area of Ragalna with the network of hiking trails created by Parco dell’Etna. It reaches the Pista Altomontana dell’Etna, the main trail in this network; from there, hikers can continue exploring the mountain area. Sentiero Monte Nero degli Zappini offers a different kind of route: it is an approximately four-kilometre loop within a state-owned forest area. Its route is shaped by the volcanic landscape, with old and more recent lava fields and an adventive volcanic cone. Its approximate length and loop format give you specific points to consider when choosing a hike.
Another trail in Parco dell’Etna near Ragalna passes through old and more recent lava fields, lava flow caves, hornitos, and natural and planted woodland. The Nuova Gussonea Botanical Garden focuses on ecosystems typical of Etna, including the unique ecosystems at higher elevations. There you can observe plant communities that are not found along the trail. Volcanic landforms and plant life thus offer different perspectives on the area’s natural environment.
Piano Vetore also brings vegetation together with black lava rock shaped by ancient eruptions. At the same time, it serves as a starting point for various hikes from which different parts of Etna can be explored. If you consider landscapes and hikes together when planning your trip, Piano Vetore offers both a striking impression of the lava rock and a starting point for exploring different parts of the mountain area.
Architecture and astronomical visits
The Chiesa Madre di Maria SS. del Carmelo, Ragalna’s most important religious building, is located in Piazza Cisterna. The cistern, an old water reservoir for collecting rainwater, is also in the piazza. Together, the church and cistern represent two distinct aspects of the townscape: religious architecture and the former use of a water reservoir.
Guided visits are offered by prior reservation at the M.G. Fracastoro site in Contrada Serra la Nave on Etna. They include a visit to a telescope and the observation of one or more astronomical objects. If you plan to include this activity, be sure to factor in the reservation requirement. Another named attraction is the EtnAvventura Serra la Nave adventure park. It is located in Contrada Serra la Nave in Ragalna, on the Nicolosi–Rifugio Sapienza side at the foot of Etna.
Local cuisine and patron saint festival
Traditional dishes in Ragalna include salsiccia with caliceddi, a wild-growing vegetable. Etna wine and chestnuts are also part of the culinary traditions associated with the town. Enoteca dell’Etna offers the bookable tasting “Iemu Spizzicannu.” It introduces Ragalna’s traditions and provides information about the Arena family and the Palmento Arena complex. The tasting can therefore be included in your travel plans as a way to experience the local food and wine culture.
An older description of the Madonna del Carmelo patron saint festival gives the last Sunday and Monday in September as the dates, and mentions processions followed by a fireworks display on Monday evening. Check the dates and programme before your trip.
