Adrano – Cultural History on the Simeto
Accommodation in Adrano
Adrano is situated on a lava plateau overlooking the Simeto Valley. The city’s history and surroundings can be discovered in different places: at the Museo archeologico in the Norman Castle, at the Teatro Vincenzo Bellini, and at archaeological sites in the surrounding area. At the same time, the river and the geological formations shape the regional landscape. If you are looking for a hotel in Adrano, this combination of urban history, archaeology, and landscape can help you decide what to focus on during your trip.
Archaeology at the Castello Normanno
The Museo archeologico di Adrano is located in the rooms of the Castello Normanno di Adrano. It preserves and displays archaeological collections dating from the Neolithic period (6500–3500 BC) to the Middle Ages (11th century AD). The collection also includes historical, art-historical, ethno-anthropological, and bibliographic collections. The museum therefore brings together a long archaeological time span with other collection areas. It is open Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 19:00, and Sundays and public holidays from 09:00 to 13:30. Check the opening hours before your visit.
The Teatro Vincenzo Bellini
The Teatro Vincenzo Bellini adds a distinct chapter of cultural history to the archaeological focus. After a renovation period of about ten years, from 1834 to 1846, it was inaugurated in 1846. Its façade is designed in the Liberty style. Its construction history and façade offer two different points of reference: the dates place the theatre in its historical context, while the Liberty style describes its architectural character.
The CittĂ del Mendolito and the history of Adranon
The archaeological site of the CittĂ Sicula del Mendolito is located in Contrada Mendolito, eight kilometres from the present-day city of Adrano. The CittĂ del Mendolito covers about 80 hectares on a basalt terrace on the eastern bank of the Simeto. Its southern city gate is flanked by two horseshoe-shaped towers and dates to the second half of the 6th century BC. Adranon is also linked to the Simeto Valley: the city was founded at the behest of Dionysius I around 400 BC in a strategic location in the valley. The Mendolito gate is therefore an earlier chronological reference point than the founding of Adranon.
The Simeto, Ponte dei Saraceni, and Giardino della Vittoria
Near Adrano stands the medieval Ponte dei Saraceni, which has withstood the forces of the Simeto for about a thousand years. Around the bridge, the river features varied geology, with a succession of waterfalls, gorges, and lava flows. A historic structure and striking features of the river landscape meet here. The Giardino della Vittoria offers a different perspective: at 35,000 square metres, it is the largest green space in the city of Adrano. The river valley, archaeological landscape, and green space offer different perspectives on the city’s surroundings.
The Volata dell'Angelo
Another distinctive event in the annual calendar is the symbolic ceremony known as the Volata dell'Angelo. It takes place on 3 August at around 20:00 in Piazza Umberto. Beforehand, a procession carrying the statue of a saint winds through the town’s streets. If you would like to attend the ceremony, check the festival programme before travelling.
