Petrosino: Hiking, Springs and Historic Trails
Accommodation in Petrosino
If you’d like to combine a stay in Petrosino with hiking or nature, several named waypoints can help you plan. The Sentiero delle Sorgenti links springs, a beech forest and a historic landmark. Ippovia 6 and Trekking del Santo lead to other points of interest; one variant of the Sentiero can also be ridden by mountain bike. The routes described cover themes ranging from nature and views to historic trails and different ways of exploring. If you’re looking for a hotel in Petrosino, these differences can help shape the focus of your trip.
The Sentiero delle Sorgenti: Forest, Springs and History
The Sentiero delle Sorgenti follows the old Trazzera Regia, which shepherds used to move livestock to pasture. It also skirts the Foresta Vecchia area and passes through a dense, striking beech forest. The Sorgente Farina lies along the first, gently rising section. The trail also passes close to Rifugio Donnavida, where hikers can take their first break; a spring is also associated with this spot. In the final section, the Sentiero first reaches Sorgente Valle dell'Uomo Morto at an altitude of 1,360 metres, then returns near Contrada Petrosino to the starting point. Forest, water sources and the historic route mark different stages of the same trail.
Obelisco di Nelson: Views and a Historic Boundary Marker
The Sentiero reaches the Obelisco di Nelson in the hamlet of Serra del Mergo, at an altitude of about 1,553 metres. The obelisk was erected in 1905 by the Duke of Nelson to mark the boundary of the Ducea. From here, you can enjoy views of the Nebrodi. Views and history meet at this waypoint: the Obelisco is both a distinctive destination on the route and a historic boundary marker.
Ippovia 6, Trekking del Santo and a Mountain-Bike Variant
Ippovia 6 passes through Bosco Petrosino to Petrosino, at an altitude of 840 metres, where you can take a break. Bosco Petrosino is also one of the points along this route where water is available. As local conditions can vary, check water availability before your hike.
After just under 4 km from Castello di Nelson, Trekking del Santo reaches the entrance to Petrosino. The Chiesetta di San Gabriele marks it on the right. Check trail conditions locally before setting out. Another activity option is a variant of the Sentiero delle Sorgenti: it starts at the Segheria above Porticelle Soprane and can be ridden by mountain bike. The routes also differ in their stated features: for Trekking del Santo, the route to the entrance of Petrosino is specified, while the alternative Sentiero variant is identified as suitable for mountain biking.
Historic Orientation and Getting to Petrosino
In the area around Petrosino, Castello di Nelson is identified with the former Benedictine Abbey of Santa Maria di Maniace; both names refer to the same complex. The main road, C.so Margherito, leads to the hamlet of Petrosino.
