At the foot of Etna, Nunziata lies in a hilly area rich in water sources. The town’s cultural character includes the medieval Chiesa della Nunziatella, an early Christian basilica and recurring festival traditions. This gives you different areas of focus when planning your trip: the history of buildings and archaeological finds, as well as events tied to particular seasons or feast days.

Church and archaeological traces

The Chiesa della Nunziatella in Nunziata di Mascali is a medieval church dedicated to Santa Maria Annunziata. Its distinctive details include original 16th-century lava stone floor slabs. They extend across more than half the church’s interior length, making the flooring a striking feature of the building. A Byzantine ring bearing a Star of David was also recovered from the church. Alongside the design of the church interior, an archaeological find is therefore another focus of the local cultural heritage.

The archaeological area of the Nunziatella includes an early Christian basilica dating from the 5th/6th century AD. It has a single apse and three naves separated by pillars. These features give a clear impression of the building’s layout. The basilica and the medieval Chiesa della Nunziatella belong to different periods. Finds in Nunziata also date back a long way: they come from prehistoric, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine times. Different periods in the town’s history can thus be encountered here, without assigning the individual buildings to the same era.

Etna landscape and local history

Nunziata’s location at the foot of Etna defines its geographical setting; the area is hilly and rich in water sources. The 1928 lava flow is also part of the town’s history: it spared Nunziata, but almost completely buried the settlement of the ancient capital of the county of the same name. This contrast between the town that was spared and the settlement that was nearly buried gives the volcanic landscape a tangible historical dimension. It adds another perspective on the area’s development to the history of its churches and finds.

Winter festival tradition and tastings

The Presepe Vivente Siciliano di Nunziata di Mascali was established in 2011. In winter, the medieval village of Nunziata, a hamlet of Mascali in the province of Catania, is transformed into ancient Palestine. Costumed performers depict the Nativity and traditional crafts. Along the route, visitors can sample homemade bread, cheese and ricotta, local wine, candied apples, pumpkin sfince, bread with dried figs and cotognata. This seasonal tradition thus combines religious pageantry and crafts with regional food. Check which tastings are planned for the next edition.

July feast day and travel season

The Festa di Maria SS del Monte Carmelo takes place every year on 16 July. It includes an open-air Mass at Piano Tamburino and a solemn procession to Nunziata’s mother church. Exact dates and arrangements may vary from one edition to the next. Unlike the winter Nativity tradition, 16 July offers a clear summer date to consider when planning your trip, while both festivals showcase different local traditions.

If you are looking for a hotel in Nunziata, you can choose your travel dates based on whether you want to include the winter Presepe Vivente or the celebration on 16 July in your plans. The history of Nunziata’s churches, buildings and town offers another area to explore.
