Discover Passopisciaro on Mount Etna
Accommodation in Passopisciaro
Passopisciaro lies on the northern side of Mount Etna, in an area with a millennia-old winemaking tradition. The revival of winemaking and the rediscovery of the northern Etna region have given the area fresh impetus and contributed to the emergence of accommodation facilities and wine tourism, attracting journalists, industry professionals and wine enthusiasts. When looking for a hotel, this background gives your trip a concrete focus: you can weigh winemaking and local history as factors in choosing where to stay.
The church and notable landmarks
The parish church of Passopisciaro was completed in 1897 after two years of construction and is designed in the Neoclassical style. Its features include Ionic and Corinthian columns, a central pediment, sandstone rosettes, the four Evangelists and an almost entirely symmetrical structure. The church also houses a plaster image of Maria SS del Rosario.
La Colonna is made entirely of lava stone and is an old road marker at a major junction in the Sicilian road network. Together with the parish church, it is regarded as one of Passopisciaro’s most representative monuments. While the church is distinguished by its Neoclassical design and construction period, La Colonna points to an earlier role in helping people find their way through the road network.
Other buildings and local memory
The small Chiesetta du protu is located in Contrada Santo Spirito, a few metres outside Passopisciaro. It is dated to approximately the 15th to 16th century; its characteristic features include a small bell tower and inset columns. By comparison, the parish church dates from the late 19th century. The two religious buildings thus offer glimpses into different periods of local history.
A bronze bust of Ettore Majorana, created by artist Carlos D'Agostino in 1986, stands in Ettore Majorana Square in the centre. Casa Cantoniera is also a local historic landmark: it is considered the oldest building in the town centre. Between 1870 and 1880, road workers Antonino Palano and Rosario Mascali are said to have lived there.
Festivals and religious traditions
The festival in honour of Maria SS del Rosario began as a celebration of gratitude for surviving the lava flows of 1923 and 1947. The connection to Maria SS del Rosario is reflected both in local festival traditions and in the plaster image in the parish church. Natale passopisciarese is a long-established local Christmas tradition. The two customs represent different aspects of cultural life in Passopisciaro: the Rosario festival commemorates surviving the lava flows, while Natale is linked to the local Christmas tradition.
