Belpasso: Santa Lucia, Lava Stone and Culture
Accommodation in Belpasso
Belpasso can be explored through a range of cultural and landscape themes: devotion to its patron saint, Santa Lucia; buildings with distinctive lava stone details; a sculpture trail; and the Sentiero 786. Together, these offer a picture of a destination where architecture, festival traditions and a longer hiking route appeal to different interests when planning a trip.
Architecture between lava stone and urban history
The Campanone di Santa Lucia was made in 1815 and weighs more than 8,000 kilograms. Specific architectural forms also shape the impression made by the palaces and Teatro Comunale: Palazzo Scrofani is distinguished by a wrought-iron balcony and a lava stone portal. At Palazzo dei Baroni Bufali di Santa Lucia, notable features include stone mascarons, carved details and a corner balcony. Teatro Comunale dates from the late 19th century and is designed in the Neoclassical style; its facade is made of white stone and lava stone. The buildings therefore differ both in their forms and in their use of materials.
A sculpture trail and its development
The “Città delle 100 Sculture” project includes several dozen lava stone sculptures, installed along the streets of Belpasso in 2016 to form a sculpture trail. The visitor route runs from Piazza S. Antonio along Via Roma to Giardino Martoglio and on to Piazza Stella Aragona. The project can continue to develop: the trail can be extended, and individual works may change. Regularly organized public sculpture symposiums are also part of it. They are international in scope and open to artists who create their works from lava stone on site. If you would like to include a symposium in your trip, check the dates for your planned travel period.
Santa Lucia: patron saint and festival tradition
Santa Lucia is the patron saint of Belpasso and is honored there every year on December 13 with religious celebrations and civic events. If you would like to plan your trip around this date, check the program for the relevant year. One notable tradition is the so-called “spaccata”: the large mechanical “Carri di Santa Lucia” are opened in Piazza Duomo and Piazza Umberto. During the “spaccata,” the carriage usually reaches a height of more than twelve meters. Details of future stagings may vary.
Planning a hike on the Sentiero 786
The Sentiero 786 is an anthropological and nature trail from Belpasso to the Rifugio Monte Manfrè mountain refuge, crossing parts of the northern municipal area. The route is 15 kilometers long, has an elevation difference of 800 meters between its starting and ending points, and includes ten stops. Signs along the route provide information about points of interest. The length, elevation difference and number of stops offer different reference points for planning the hike. Check the current condition of the route before setting out.
A harvest festival with a cultural connection
The Sagra del Ficodindia dell’Etna DOP began as a community initiative to mark the end of the harvest. With its 2025 edition, it reached its tenth year. Over time, the event has developed into a combination of festival, culture and agricultural promotion. If the festival is a deciding factor for your trip, check the date and program for the relevant edition.
