Giarre: Culture and nature between Mount Etna and the sea
Accommodation in Giarre
Giarre lies on the east coast of Sicily, between Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea. The town combines these cultural themes with a clear connection to Mount Etna’s natural attractions.
Historic centre and architecture
In the historic centre, streets paved with lava stone, 18th-century buildings and Liberty-style palaces are among the defining features. They offer a tangible point of interest for different tastes, from views of the historic building fabric to the architecture of the palaces.
Giarre Cathedral is a Neoclassical church with a Latin cross floor plan and three aisles. The cathedral also houses a painting of the Virgin Mary and the Saints by Pietro Paolo Vasta. A visit therefore brings together two aspects: the church’s layout and a work of religious art. The Oratorio on Via Callipoli provides another architectural highlight. It is considered the only example of Sicilian Barocchetto in the province of Catania.
The Santuario di Santa Maria la Strada can also be viewed in its historical context. It is about two kilometres from the town centre, in the hamlet of S. Maria la Strada, on the state road towards Messina. The building is attributed to Roger the Norman: according to tradition, he had the sanctuary built in 1080 in devotion to the Madonna after his victory over the Saracens. Its approximate distance and location on the road are useful points of reference when planning to visit.
Puppet theatre and planning your visit
The Teatro-Museo dei Pupi Siciliani is located at the headquarters of the Pro Loco di Giarre in Piazza Mons. Alessi. Puppet theatre was once a lively tradition in Giarre; the museum is a tangible link to this earlier cultural life. For groups, the Teatro-Museo stages various puppet shows by reservation. Groups may include no more than 70 people, and a fee is charged for the performance. If you are planning to attend a show, take these conditions into account when arranging your group.
The Pro Loco di Giarre also offers guided tourist services. Confirm their availability before your trip. This allows you to distinguish between planning your own cultural itinerary and the possibility of a guided tour, without treating the two as the same offer.
Landscape and nature destinations
Giarre’s panoramic location offers views of the Valle del Bove. From the town, the main natural attractions of Parco dell'Etna and several starting points for excursions and guided car tours are just a few minutes away. Actual journey times may vary. If nature and excursions are your priority, this connection is a separate consideration when planning your trip; at the same time, the historic centre remains a distinct focus of your stay.
Another botanical attraction is Radicepura Park. Its features include a citrus terrace, opened in October 2022, with several varieties dating back to the 18th century. These are part of a project to preserve historic citrus plants. The park thus combines a visit to a botanical garden with a specific focus on plant conservation. It offers another clearly defined reason to visit as you choose between cultural activities and nature interests.
Getting to Giarre
Giarre has an exit on the A18 Catania–Messina motorway. Giarre-Riposto railway station is on the Messina–Catania–Syracuse line. These road and rail connections provide two different reference points for planning your journey. Consider which mode of transport suits your trip and which of the topics described you would like to explore during your stay.
