Valverde offers several points of interest for travellers interested in religious traditions, art and historic buildings. There are also viewpoints offering different perspectives: from the square, Mount Etna can be seen above the rooftops, while houses on Carminello Hill partly obstruct the view. This combination of cultural attractions and specific viewpoints gives the town its own distinctive character.

Pilgrimage traditions and the August procession

Valverde’s religious history is linked to the Santuario di Maria Santissima di Valverde. According to tradition, an image of the Virgin Mary appeared on a column in the sanctuary. Valverde subsequently became a destination for ongoing pilgrimages. Contrada Fontana is also connected with this story: a small chapel houses a painting of the Virgin Mary’s first apparition.

The religious tradition also includes a procession during the August commemorative week. On the last Sunday of the week, the Madonna di Valverde is carried through the town’s streets. The event concludes with a musical performance and fireworks. The programme may vary from year to year, so if you would like to plan your trip around this occasion, check the programme for the relevant year.

Churches and artistic details

The façade of the Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie features two distinct elements: a lava-stone portal and a large rectangular window above it. Inside is a life-size wooden crucifix attributed to Giuseppe Castorina of Ganzirri. The façade and crucifix offer two different ways to appreciate the building: one through the design of its entrance, the other through a single work of art and its attribution.

Another religious building is the Eremo di Sant’Anna. The church dates from the 18th century, is Baroque in style and is attached to a monastery. Its elevated location offers views of the Ionian coast. This distinguishes the Eremo’s description from the architectural details of the Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie: here, the focus is on its connection to the monastery and its location.

Sundial and Fontana di Casalrosato

Among the historic sights is the “Orologio Solare Equinoziale con Lunette di Lettura”. The sundial dates from the Baroque period, around 1630, and is made of grey granite. The approximate date places it within an era without specifying an exact year of origin. Its Italian name refers to the sundial and the lunettes; its material and historical context give it a distinct and clearly defined place among Valverde’s sights.

The Fontana di Casalrosato is a local sight known for its beauty and historical value. Together with the sundial, it broadens the focus beyond churches and pilgrimage traditions to include other historic places and objects. Visitors exploring Valverde’s cultural attractions can distinguish between religious stories, sacred art and individual historic sights.

Mount Etna and views of the surrounding area

The viewpoints also offer a useful comparison. From Valverde’s square, Mount Etna can be seen above the rooftops. The summit of Carminello Hill, at the end of Via Carminello, is considered another viewpoint; houses there partly obstruct the view. When planning your visit, it is therefore helpful not to treat the two descriptions as equivalent: the view from the square looks towards Mount Etna above the rooftops, while the view from Carminello is specifically described as partly obstructed.

Valverde can thus be explored through a range of interests: the procession and pilgrimage traditions reflect its religious heritage, the church and crucifix represent its architecture and art, and the sundial and fountain offer further historic sights. The viewpoints add to these attractions, though they do not offer the same view. Which ones matter most for your trip depends on whether you want to focus primarily on traditions, buildings or views.
