Prevalle: Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Prevalle
Prevalle brings together natural and cultural heritage: caves on Monte Budellone, an avenue of mulberry trees, an unfinished palazzo and several religious landmarks represent very different sides of the area. If you are planning a stay, you can focus on geological features, architectural history and seasonal traditions, depending on your interests.
Caves and Landscapes on Monte Budellone
Buco del Frate is located on Monte Budellone in the municipality of Prevalle and is one of the most significant underground cavities in the Brescia region. It has been protected as a natural monument since 1983. The species most frequently identified in Buco del Frate include the cave bear (Ursus spelaeus), wolf (Canis lupus), fox (Vulpes vulpes) and marmot (Marmota marmota).
Büs dei Lader is a small cave in Liassic limestone on the southern slope of Monte Budellone. The two caves have different features: Buco del Frate is notable for its regional significance, protected status and identified species, while Büs dei Lader is distinguished by its rock and hillside location.
The avenue of mulberry trees in Prevalle offers a different kind of landscape. It consists of 38 evenly spaced white mulberry trees (Morus alba). The trunks have an average circumference of 3 metres; the maximum diameter is 110 centimetres, and the trees are an average of 12 metres tall. The circumference and height are averages, while 110 centimetres is the maximum trunk diameter.
Palazzo and Museum
Palazzo Morani-Cantoni was built for Count Giovanni Morani in the first half of the 18th century and remained unfinished. The building features characteristic Neoclassical elements. Its construction period, patron and unfinished state give its architectural history a clear context.
The Museo della Civiltà Contadina e dell’Agricoltura is housed in the former stables of Palazzo Morani in Prevalle. The palazzo and museum have different focuses: one explores the building’s history and Neoclassical features, while the other focuses on rural life and agriculture. Their architectural and cultural-historical themes complement each other without telling the same story.
Churches and Bell Tower
The bell tower beside the Church of San Zenone in Prevalle Sotto was built in 1596. It is 28.70 metres tall and leans by about 76 centimetres, which is roughly 1.52 degrees. The bell tower can be viewed from the outside. Check before visiting whether this is still possible.
The present structure of the Church of San Zenone Vescovo was completed and consecrated in 1818. The parish of San Michele Arcangelo was established on 15 October 1462 by Bishop Bartolomeo Malipiero, when it was separated from the Pieve di Nuvolento. These dates mark different stages in the church’s history: the establishment of the parish in the 15th century and the completion of the present church structure in the 19th century.
Devotional Tradition and Regional Cuisine
A votive painting in the Sanctuary of Madonna del Carrozzone commemorates the cholera outbreak of 1836. The procession from Baderniga to the sanctuary is an established annual devotional tradition and takes place on the second Sunday in July. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the exact date before making arrangements.
Spiedo also has a seasonal connection, this time to the autumn cuisine of the Province of Brescia: it is considered the province’s most traditional dish. The procession takes place in July, while spiedo is associated with autumn cuisine. These offer two different seasonal ways to explore the region’s traditions.
