Pontevico between the Oglio River and Cultural Heritage

Pontevico lies on the Oglio River, which forms a natural boundary with Cremona. The area of Pontevico is also within the Parco del fiume Oglio. The river was much more than a geographical line in the town’s history: since prehistoric times, the Oglio has served Pontevico as an important military and commercial port. Flat-bottomed river boats, known as “barbotte,” transported sand and gravel extracted from the river. This combination of location and use gives the river landscape a historical context and provides a fitting backdrop for understanding Pontevico’s cultural and architectural history.

Churches, Art and Architectural History

Historic Pontevico developed around the Pieve di Sant’Andrea. The Chiesa di San Giuseppe houses a painting by Francesco Paglia. At the Chiesa di San Fermo, the exterior and interior can be distinguished by specific features: the church has a rectangular floor plan and a pronaos supported by Doric columns. This technical term refers to the columned area in front of the building and helps explain its exterior design. Inside, San Fermo features relief decoration and wall paintings; the nave is single-aisled, meaning it has no side aisles. Its earlier role is also part of its history: in the 16th century, San Fermo was merely a devotional chapel dedicated to the Beata Vergine dello Strone.

Villa Martinoni adds a different type of building: it dates from the first half of the 18th century. The Museo del Maglio is housed in a historic forge that was operated by a family from Pontevico for more than a hundred years. The forge roots the museum in local working history and broadens the view from religious buildings to the town’s craft heritage.

Protected Areas along the Oglio and Strone Rivers

The Parco Locale di Interesse Sovracomunale del Fiume Strone was recognized by the Regione Lombardia in 1990 for its scenic beauty and natural interest. The Parco sovracomunale del fiume Strone includes the Oasi delle Vincellate and the areas of Verolanuova, Verolavecchia, San Paolo, and Pontevico. It is considered the last remaining wetland area in the lower Brescia plain. Together with the municipal area’s location within the Parco del fiume Oglio, this protected-area connection offers a distinctive way to explore the landscape around Pontevico.

Cycling Routes and Specific Destinations

The routes offer different points of reference: the Brescia–Bassa bresciana cycle and pedestrian path reaches the Oglio at Pontevico; check the signs and local conditions before using this route. The Brescia–Cremona provincial cycling route crosses the Parco Locale di Interesse Sovracomunale del Fiume Strone from Cadignano to Pontevico. The Ciclovia dell’Oglio can also be continued from Pontevico in either direction. The cycling trip from Brescia to Pontevico ends at Castello di Pontevico on the Oglio.
