Vobarno combines nature experiences and architectural history in clearly distinct themes: the summit cross Croce del Monte Cingolo can be reached on foot, the Riserva Naturale Sorgente Funtanì draws attention to a distinctive spring landscape, and churches and a bridge shape the historic town center. This gives you different options for planning your trip: exercise in the mountains, natural history, or architecture and local history.

Hike to the Croce del Monte Cingolo

You can reach the summit cross Croce del Monte Cingolo via two possible routes. The route over the east ridge requires some climbing skills, at least on the upper section. If you are considering this approach, bear in mind that this requirement applies specifically to that part of the route. This lets you choose your route based on a specific question: Do you have the stated skills for the upper section of the east ridge?

The summit cross is a clear destination for a hike; the two possible approaches offer different ways to reach it on foot. The climbing requirement for the east-ridge route expressly applies to the upper section. It should therefore not be applied generally to both routes.

The Val Degagna natural area

The Riserva Naturale Sorgente Funtanì covers 54.93 hectares on the right-hand orographic slope of the Val Degagna. The Val Degagna is one of the most important side valleys of the lower Val Sabbia. As a Site of Community Importance, the protected area is part of the Natura 2000 network; its code is IT2070019. Its area, position on the valley slope and protected status give this natural area a clearly defined profile.

One distinctive feature of its natural history is its rare, partly endemic mollusk fauna. This is characteristic of certain springs in the protected area and in the Val Degagna. Anyone interested in the destination’s natural environment will find not only its formal protected-area designation here, but also a specific focus: mollusks and their connection to these spring locations.

Architectural history and historic places

The Santuario della Madonna della Rocca originally began as a fortified castle, built between the 9th and 10th centuries. It probably stood on Roman ruins and was intended to repel Hungarian invasions. The Torre campanaria is a testament to the old fortification system that surrounded Monte Cingolo hill together with the present-day Santuario. The Rocca in Vobarno is also a fortified castle, or rocca, that historically served a defensive purpose.

The Chiesa di San Rocco, a Renaissance church near the Teatro comunale, is located in the historic town center. The Ponte Vecchio is also in the historic town center: this historic Venetian bridge adds another type of structure to the perspective on architectural history. The Chiesa Parrocchiale Santa Maria Assunta has a single-nave interior, richly decorated and adorned with frescoes. The Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta in Vobarno is dated to the period from 1754 to 1761.

Exploring Vobarno offers a look at different aspects of history: sacred architecture, the Renaissance, Venetian bridge-building and earlier forms of fortification. The buildings represent different functions and features; the frescoes and single-nave interior add a specific detail of the church interior to the exterior architecture.

A day trip through the Val Degagna

The “Vita da capraio” experience begins in Vobarno and leads through the Val Degagna to the old village of Cecino. The one-day experience includes a visit to a mountain hut or alpine farm and a tasting of mountain products. This differs in focus from the hike to the Croce del Monte Cingolo: here, the route through the valley, the village and the tasting are part of the described experience; for the summit hike, the possible routes and the climbing skills required on the upper section of the east-ridge route are key.

Before booking, check the current itinerary and tasting arrangements, as program and booking details may change.
