Lavenone between mountain passes and local history
Accommodation in Lavenone
A stay in Lavenone can be planned around several specific interests: trails starting from Vaiale and leading to named mountain passes, churches in the center and in the hamlets of Claone and Bisenzio, or the history of the Maglio. The roads and landscape offer further points of interest. The following place names and elevations will help you distinguish between a route, sacred buildings and artisan history, and plan your days accordingly.
Hiking trails and mountain pass destinations
CAI Trail 439 starts in Vaiale. From Lavenone, Vaiale can be reached via a paved road in the direction of Presegno and Bisenzio. From the center of Lavenone, the access road runs through the valley of the Torrente Abbioccolo and then through the Valle della Spina in the direction of Vaiale. The two valleys provide clear landmarks for the drive. Conditions on mountain roads can change; check road conditions before setting out. Vaiale is also the starting point shared by Trail 439 and Sentiero N. 441: one begins there, while the other leads from there to Passo della Croce.
Another mountain pass destination is reached via CAI Trail 438, which climbs through a beech forest to Passo Zeno at 1,456 m. Sentiero N. 441 leads from Vaiale to Passo della Croce at 1,219 m. At 237 m higher, Passo Zeno is the higher destination. The two trail descriptions thus differ in both landscape feature and destination elevation. When comparing the mountain pass destinations, a forest climb and the route from Vaiale to Passo della Croce provide distinct points of reference.
Churches and local history
The Chiesa di San Bartolomeo Apostolo is located in the center of Lavenone. The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista stands in the hamlet of Claone, in a commanding position above Lavenone. In Bisenzio, the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Neve was completely rebuilt starting in 1749. The three churches are therefore associated with different locations: the center, Claone above Lavenone, and Bisenzio. Santa Maria della Neve also has a clear historical connection in addition to its location: its complete reconstruction began in 1749.
The Maglio di Lavenone reveals another aspect of local history: copper cauldrons were made there. Unlike the churches, the focus here is on artisan production. Sacred buildings and copper cauldron making thus offer two different ways to explore Lavenone’s history—through the locations of its churches, on the one hand, and through the work associated with the Maglio, on the other.
Exploring the mountain landscape
The road from Lavenone to Presegno and Bisenzio passes through a landscape surrounded by the “Piccole Dolomiti.” Along the way, you can see waterfalls and impressive panoramas. The drive therefore complements the valleys on the route to Vaiale with a different perspective on the landscape: mountain scenery, waterfalls and views define this stretch of road. If you are planning either a starting point for hiking trails or a drive through this landscape, these offer two different ways to find your bearings.
