Art, architectural history and walking routes offer different ways to plan your trip to Gussago. Cultural highlights include a Stations of the Cross with artworks at every station, churches featuring notable works and historic buildings. The routes also vary: one circular trail is three kilometres long, while another follows an ancient Roman road.

Art and Architectural History in Gussago

The Sentiero delle Croci was created in 2002 by artists from Gussago. A separate work of art was created for each station. The Stations of the Cross thus combine their religious form with a design in which each station features an artistic work.

The Pieve di Santa Maria Vecchia is the oldest building in Gussago. It houses the Pulpito di Maviorano, a Lombard sculptural work from the 8th or 9th century. La Santissima reflects a different period of architecture: the former Dominican complex stands on a hill above Gussago and retains the Neo-Gothic forms that Rodolfo Vantini gave it at the beginning of the 20th century.

In Ronco, the Chiesa di San Zenone displays two paintings from the school of Vincenzo Foppa, as well as a Stations of the Cross by the 19th-century painter Amanzia Guerrillot. Other historic buildings include the Casa della Begia, a rural manor house dating from the 14th or 15th century. Villa Togni già Averoldi offers another point of interest with its Italian garden: hornbeam hedges enclose it, and gravel paths are arranged around a central axis.

Routes and Distances

Parco della Santissima offers a three-kilometre circular trail on Colle Barbisone, with 16 stations along a fitness trail. The Antica Strada Romana is a 3.5-kilometre route following an ancient Roman road. It runs from the parish church in Ronco to Casaglio. The circular trail is therefore half a kilometre shorter; these figures give you a clear comparison of the route lengths.

The Itinerario valle Gandine offers a different landscape, leading to a rocky area with numerous karst features. For cyclists, the Ciclovia della Cultura passes through the centre of Gussago via Piazza Vittorio Veneto. Alongside routes in the surrounding area, this provides a cycling route with a named section in the town centre as another point of reference.

Seasonal Cuisine and Getting There

From September to December, “Lo Spiedo Scoppiettando” is served at local trattorias and restaurants. The menu features the original Gussago recipe for spiedo. As dates and participating venues may vary, check the latest details before planning a visit. Another culinary option is “Tre generazioni di grappe in Franciacorta”: the experience includes a guided tasting with sbrisolona and chocolate. Confirm availability when booking.

For bus travel, FNMA lines F27–L62 connect Gussago with Iseo; line 13 runs to Brescia. As routes and timetables may change, check the details with the transport operators before travelling. This makes it easy to factor the seasonal offerings and bus connections into your plans.
