Ponte di Legno: Slopes, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Ponte Di Legno
Skiing, trails and culture offer different focuses for a trip to Ponte di Legno. The Pontedilegno-Tonale ski area is dedicated to winter sports; for the trails, starting points, elevation and route are key differences. Wildlife watching, sacred art and historic architecture also offer different directions for planning your trip. If you’re looking for a hotel, you can first consider which of these interests you want to shape your stay.
Skiing among slopes and forests
The 46 slopes in the Pontedilegno-Tonale ski area are connected by 30 modern lifts. These figures provided by the operators may change if the area is redeveloped in the future. Near Ponte di Legno, ski slopes wind through dense pine and fir forests. This brings together two distinct aspects: the figures give an overview of the slopes and lifts, while the forest describes the landscape along the slopes.
Wildlife and its way of life
At the Area faunistica di Pezzo, visitors can observe deer, roe deer, ibex and chamois at close range. The facility is designed for educational and recreational purposes and houses hoofed animals such as deer and roe deer. An information point and visitor centre complement the wildlife watching: images and panels provide information about the species found there, their habits and how they adapt to the winter cold. This combines observing the animals with learning about their way of life.
Sacred art and architectural history
The Museo Parrocchiale d'Arte Sacra was established in 1980 by converting the rectory. Its collection includes sacred objects and furnishings, hand-embroidered liturgical vestments, and chalices and monstrances from the 17th century. The Chiesa parrocchiale della S.ma TrinitĂ was built between the 16th and 20th centuries. The comparison is therefore between a conversion dated to 1980 and a much longer construction period.
Case di Viso offers another perspective on the region’s history. The village is located in the Valle di Viso, in the municipality of Ponte di Legno, at 1,753 metres above sea level, and is a tourist destination. Some houses retain their original stonework architecture, which in part dates back to the early 19th century. This architectural detail applies to some houses, not to the entire village.
Valbione and the trails
Valbione lies at an altitude of about 1,500 metres and can be reached from Ponte di Legno by chairlift or via a 4-kilometre mountain road. The Sentiero n. 647 – Valbione-Corno d’Aola starts in the Valbione plateau. The plateau can be reached from Ponte di Legno by car or on foot in about an hour. These details distinguish Valbione’s elevation from the approximate travel time given for reaching the plateau.
The Sentiero n. 647 follows a military road through a spruce forest and reaches Fort Corno d’Aola, which was destroyed by the Germans during the Second World War. Another trail begins in Sant’Apollonia, in the heart of the Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio: the Sentiero n. 158. It runs through the valley floor of the Valle delle Messi along an easily walkable agricultural, forestry and pastoral road through an alpine landscape. The starting point and route through the landscape provide guidance without describing the trails as having the same route features.
More nature and cycling ideas
Sozzine Park in Valsozzine features water play areas for children, wooden sculptures and a relaxation area. Active play features and a place to rest sit side by side. This also makes the park an appealing option for travellers who want to include a specific nature and leisure activity in their plans alongside trails and elevations.
For cyclists, the protected section of the Ciclovia del Fiume Oglio in the Alta Valle connects Ponte di Legno with Vezza d’Oglio over 12 kilometres; it starts near the lifts in Ponte di Legno. Bicycles can also be carried on the cable car that connects Ponte di Legno with Passo del Tonale. The cycle path and carrying a bicycle on the cable car are two separate details, each of which may play a distinct role in planning.
