Marcheno between Church Art and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Marcheno
Marcheno brings together historic religious buildings, archaeological traces and nature trails to help you plan your trip. The churches reflect different phases of construction and decoration; traces of settlement date back to the Early Iron Age. Outdoors, you can choose between a nature trail and a memorial path. This makes it easy to tailor your stay to your interests in cultural history, nature observation or hiking.
Churches and Art History
The Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo was consecrated in 1685. Another landmark of religious architecture is the Santuario della Madonnina, built between 1608 and 1620. Its chapel contains a 16th-century fresco depicting the enthroned Madonna and Child with musical angels; it can be seen from outside. The sanctuary’s construction and the fresco’s creation therefore belong to different periods.
The central nave’s decoration also has its own date: Domenico Voltolini painted its walls and dome in 1720. The sanctuary thus offers several points of reference in time: the older chapel fresco and the later decoration of the central nave. In Brozzo, the Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo adds to the picture. It was consecrated in 1522 and has a single nave, with an interior entirely decorated with frescoes. These features draw attention both to the layout and to the paintings.
Early Settlement Traces in Rocca
The history of settlement here also spans several periods. Archaeological remains were discovered in 1975 in the village of Rocca in Marcheno and dated to the Early Iron Age, the 8th to 7th centuries BC. The settlements evidenced by these remains were also inhabited during Roman times. It is helpful to distinguish between the dates: 1975 marks the discovery, while the finds point to much earlier periods of human life. The Roman period adds another documented era to the Early Iron Age traces.
Nature and Trails
In Valle Vandeno, a nature trail leads to rare and protected animal and plant species that can be observed there. This provides a focus on nature observation alongside the churches and archaeological traces. The Sentiero del partigiano Moretti combines hiking with remembrance: it commemorates the young partisan Moretti, who stood clearly and resolutely for freedom. The route starts at the car park of Marcheno’s comprehensive school and follows paths and mule tracks with information boards.
The route designated hiking trail 320–325 leads from Piani di Caregno to the Rifugio CAI Valtrompia hut in Pontogna. Its start and end points therefore differ from those of the Sentiero del partigiano Moretti, which starts in Marcheno and has an explicitly stated commemorative purpose. Before setting out, it is advisable to check the current condition of the trails, as conditions may change. This allows you to distinguish between the two hiking options by their described routes and focus.
Getting to the Surrounding Region
In the area around Marcheno, Valle Trompia can be reached by car, bus, train and plane. For your specific journey, it is advisable to check the appropriate connection and the timetable for your chosen mode of transport in advance. If churches, the discovery history in Rocca or a trail are the focus of your stay, you can take these interests into account when planning further.
