Explore Brescia through its varied historical themes: from the ancient city to art and spirituality, medieval buildings and later periods. When planning your stay, these themes can help you choose the sights that interest you most. The museums and historical sites do not all tell the same story: some cover a long span of time, while others focus on a particular period or subject.

From Prehistory to the Roman City

The Museo di Santa Giulia presents the history, art and spirituality of Brescia, from prehistory to the present day. It therefore covers a broad span of time. The Brixia. Parco archeologico di Brescia romana offers a more focused perspective: its archaeological route leads through the ancient city. It is one of the most important and best-preserved archaeological routes in Italy and was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011.

These two themes are easy to distinguish: Santa Giulia explores Brescia’s history across many periods, while Brixia focuses on the Roman city. If you are especially interested in antiquity, the archaeological route offers a specific focus. If you would like to explore different aspects of the city’s history, the Museo di Santa Giulia covers a wider range. Both perspectives make Brescia an appealing destination for visitors interested in cultural history, without requiring you to limit your choice to just one period.

Power, Remembrance and Collections

Castello di Brescia is a fortified complex on Colle Cidneo. Traces of successive rulers can still be seen there today. At the Castello, you can explore paths and spaces that are often hidden and full of secrets. The complex thus combines a distinctive historical architectural form with visible traces of its changing past.

The Museo del Risorgimento Leonessa d’Italia offers a different perspective on the past. It preserves a significant part of Brescia’s heritage relating to the history of the Risorgimento. This collection was formed mainly through donations from citizens to the city museums from the late 19th century onward. The subject connects the city’s history with the civic contributions through which much of this heritage entered the municipal collections.

The Museo delle Armi Luigi Marzoli is housed in the 14th-century Mastio Visconteo. Its exhibition route includes more than 700 objects and documents technological and artistic advances in weapons production in Brescia and the surrounding area. It spans the period from the 15th century to the beginning of the 19th century. You can therefore approach this museum through two clearly defined interests: its historical period and the development of technology and design in weapons production.

City History in Squares and Cultural Programming

Piazza Paolo VI has medieval origins and is considered the heart of the city of Brescia. A 14th-century fresco depicting the Madonna and Child on a throne is also still visible in Palazzo Broletto. These two places offer a different focus from the museums: here you will encounter a square with a long-standing role in city life and a single surviving work of art. The fresco offers a specific opportunity to notice the religious imagery of the Middle Ages.

Teatro Grande di Brescia also expands the cultural offering with performing arts and events. Its program includes opera, ballet, concerts, dance, cultural initiatives and projects for children. If you would like to include a particular event or genre in your travel plans, check the dates for your travel period; individual schedules may change.

A Stay with Different Points of Interest

BiciMia can be used for cycling around Brescia. As the service’s availability may change, it is advisable to check before making plans. This means that, alongside museums, historical sites and cultural programming, cycling can also be an option for your trip. The themes you choose to prioritize can shape the character of your stay: the Roman past, art and collections, medieval traces, or a cultural program of performances and initiatives.
