Siviano brings together a theme shaped by net-making, distinctive historic buildings and a terraced hillside landscape. The Museo della Rete, the medieval Martinengo Tower and the street running through the historic centre each add a different point of interest. The small harbour and the walking routes described here also give you several specific points of reference for planning your trip.

Net-making traditions at Porto di Siviano

The Museo della Rete is housed in the La Rete Srl net factory at Porto di Siviano. It is the oldest factory still in operation on Monte Isola. The museum also includes a typical naèt fishing boat. The museum therefore offers a perspective ranging from the subject of nets to a specific fishing boat.

The heritage trail highlights net-making traditions at two stops. In Siviano, sign number 3 tells a legend about the island's nets; the trail also leads to Porto di Siviano. There you will find the island's largest net factory and one of the few net factories still preserved. The stop in the village offers a narrated tradition, while the harbour illustrates the importance of the net-making trade.

Tower, church and historic centre

The medieval Martinengo Tower dominates Siviano and shapes its appearance. The parish church, Chiesa dei Santi Faustino e Giovita, has its own building history: it was built in the 16th century and rebuilt on the same site between 1735 and 1754. The two dates mark the church's construction and its later rebuilding.

The historic centre is characterised by a long, largely straight main street lined with the oldest houses. Together with the dominant tower and the church, this creates a village setting with several points of reference: a medieval building, a church with several construction phases and a street lined with the oldest houses.

Terraced hillside and walking routes

Siviano stretches across a terraced slope facing northeast, among vineyards and olive trees. The terraces, vines and olive trees give the landscape a different character from the net factories at the harbour: here, the slope and cultivation shape the surroundings, while the net-making trade takes centre stage there.

The small harbour can be reached on foot in a few minutes via a path branching off from the village.

Walking and hands-on experiences

The walking route from Siviano via Cure to the Santuario della Ceriola passes beneath the parish church. From Cure, a partly steep climb takes 20 minutes to reach the Santuario. For planning purposes, this time refers to the section from Cure, not to the entire walking route.

During the “Andiamo in rete” experience, you first visit a museum about the history of nets and the area's interconnected networks; afterwards, you make an object from cord and netting. The museum may be temporarily closed. Therefore, check whether the experience is available before your trip.
