Gambara: Churches, Festivals and Traditions
Accommodation in Gambara
For a stay in Gambara, places of cultural and historical interest meet festivals with their own customs. The churches and Castello Gambara-Calini represent different periods in the town’s history; the events offer further possible reasons to plan a trip. Important for your planning: Castello is privately owned and cannot be visited. For events tied to specific dates, it is advisable to check the current edition.
Churches and Castle History
Castello Gambara-Calini was a fortress and the residence of the Gambara noble family. Its origins date back to the 14th or 15th century. The Santuario della Madonna della Neve stands in front of the family’s castle.
The Santuario is documented as early as 885: that year, Count Suppone donated this building and San Pietro to the monastery of Leno. The present-day Santuario della Madonna della Neve was built in 1504, after the earlier, dilapidated building had been demolished. The interior features relief-decorated surfaces and wall paintings. The single-nave space ends in a rectangular presbytery.
The Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo Apostoli has a different layout: its single-nave hall has side chapels, and the rectangular presbytery ends in an apse. On November 11, 1595, the church became Gambara’s parish church, after the baptistery and chapter of Santa Maria della Neve were moved there. The two churches thus represent different architectural and historical themes: the Santuario, a new building dating to 1504; Santi Pietro e Paolo, the relocation of church institutions and its status as a parish church in 1595.
Festivals and Local Customs
A 2025 municipal description mentions concerts among the events at the Festa della Madonna della Neve; the celebrations can last up to five days. The Cena della Neve is traditionally held as part of the festivities. Dates vary from one edition to another. At this communal meal, participants bring their own tables, chairs, food and drinks, as well as tablecloths, napkins and cutlery.
Gambara celebrates San Gottardo Day on May 4. At the Festa patronale di San Gottardo, families and friends gather in the fields beside the church of the same name to share meals, sing and play Briscola. Tents, motorhomes, tractors and caravans are also set up. The traditional picnic includes salami, sausages, BisolĂ , savory pies, eggs, cheese, grilled food and wine.
Another dated custom is the traditional Falò di Sant'Antonio: on January 17, a bonfire is lit in Gambara in honor of Saint Anthony Abbot. People gather around the fire to enjoy doughnuts, other traditional sweets and mulled wine. The Festa della Madonna della Neve, the gathering for San Gottardo and the bonfire for Sant'Antonio thus differ both in their occasion and in the customs described.
The Incanto di San Rocco is a traditional charity auction that has been held for almost 180 years. Donated items such as sweets and flowers are offered for sale. The Fiera di San Giuseppe features tastings of rural cuisine and specialties from various regions of Italy, as well as concerts of traditional music.
