Calvagese Della Riviera: Wine, Art and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Calvagese Della Riviera
Calvagese Della Riviera brings together morainic landscapes, architectural history and winemaking traditions. Highlights for visitors include churches and historic buildings, MArteS in Carzago, wineries in the area and Arzaga Golf in the hills of the municipality. This lets you tailor your stay to different interests without reducing the area to a single theme.
Landscape and wine
Calvagese della Riviera lies on the outer slopes of the morainic amphitheatre of Lake Garda. On one side, the municipality is bounded by the extensive alluvial deposits of the Chiese River. The morainic landscape and the riverbank thus provide different geographical points of reference for the area: one describes its location in the Lake Garda region, while the other marks a boundary of the municipality.
Wine is also part of the local character. Calvagese della Riviera is a production area for Garda Classico DOC wine; Groppello di Mocasina, Riesling and Chiaretto wines are also associated with the area. A visit to local wineries offers insights into local traditions. The Festa del Groppello was held for the tenth time in 2025. If you would like to include an event in your travel plans, check the dates for your intended year of travel.
Churches and architectural history
The Chiesa della Cattedra di San Pietro in Antiochia stands on a morainic hill in a commanding position above the settlement. Traces of 15th-century frescoes survive inside the church. Its elevated position and the traces of frescoes highlight two different aspects of the building: its place in the townscape and evidence of its historic interior decoration.
The Chiesa di San Lorenzo Martire stands on a hill above the village of Carzago. Its single-nave interior has a frescoed vault. The Chiesa della Disciplina is also in Carzago, next to the parish church. It was built between the 17th and 18th centuries and also has a single-nave interior, but with a visible wooden roof structure. The two churches can therefore be compared through their floor plans, while the frescoed vault at San Lorenzo and the visible wooden roof at the Chiesa della Disciplina create distinct architectural impressions.
Access information updated on 14 January 2025 lists both the Chiesa della Cattedra di San Pietro in Antiochia and the Chiesa di San Lorenzo Martire as accessible to people with disabilities and open to all citizens. If this information is important for your plans, check it again before your visit.
Castello di Carzago was probably built in the 13th century on a square ground plan. Parts of the walls, including four round defensive towers, have survived. The access information, updated on 17 January 2025, describes the route from the car park in Piazza Roma: from there, a short uphill walk leads to the castle. The square ground plan and surviving towers each bring different features of the complex to life.
Art at MArteS and other interests
MArteS – Museo d'Arte Sorlini is housed in an elegant 17th-century palazzo in Carzago. Its collection comprises more than 180 paintings, predominantly of Venetian and Veneto origin, dating from the 14th to the 19th century. The collection spans several centuries; art lovers can explore works with a clear regional focus.
An admission ticket is required to enter MArteS. You can buy one online or at the ticket office; booking in advance is recommended. This information can help you plan your museum visit.
Golf is another possible focus: Arzaga Golf is located in the hills of Calvagese della Riviera. You can submit a reservation request to Arzaga Golf; the golf reception will confirm it by email within 24 hours. Art, churches, wine and golf thus offer different ways to decide which aspects of the area you would most like to explore during your stay.
