Casto: Via Ferratas, Gorges and Industrial History
Accommodation in Casto
In Casto, via ferratas and waterscapes meet traces of ironworking. The different themes offer practical starting points for planning your trip: Would you like to explore via ferrata sections, experience a gorge and a river, or learn more about the history of local ironworking? The town’s historical development can also be traced through several named places and buildings.
Via Ferratas and Zipline: Different Participation Requirements
The Via Ferrate di Casto, laid out as a circular route, consists of 21 independent sections. It is approximately 2,000 metres long in total, with an elevation gain of about 700 metres. These figures give an idea of the scale of the route, but do not indicate how long a visit will take. The via ferratas have a minimum age requirement of over 10 and a minimum height of 1.30 metres. Mountain clothing, technical footwear and safety equipment are required.
Another activity is the zipline in Parco delle Fucine. It consists of two descents and connects two opposite mountain slopes with a steel cable. It is open to people over 10 who weigh less than 90 kilograms. Tickets and the required equipment are available at the information point. For the via ferratas, participants must meet both an age and a minimum-height requirement; the zipline has a weight limit. This makes it easy to check the requirements for each activity separately.
Gorges, Water and Trails
Stretta di Luina is a gorge carved into the rock by water. The via ferrata sections there run close to the water, which continues to flow. This makes the water an integral part of the route, rather than just a backdrop. For visitors interested in rock formations and via ferratas, the focus here is on the close proximity of the trail to the water.
The trail to Rifugio Paradiso is also shaped by water, but takes a different route through the landscape: it follows the river through the entire “Pisot” gorge and passes beneath a waterfall. The comparison highlights two distinct features of Casto. At Stretta di Luina, via ferrata sections run close to the water; on the trail to Rifugio Paradiso, the river, gorge and waterfall accompany the route.
Ironworking and Industrial History
The historic industrial district in Parco delle Fucine includes six forges, a smelting furnace, a mill and a lime kiln. The different types of facilities offer an impression of the variety of local ironworking. Museo Fucina Zanetti offers another perspective: it presents Casto’s history of ironworking from the 17th century, when the area had 35 facilities.
The museum preserves an iron hammer with its waterwheel, as well as another wheel. The second wheel once powered a cutting machine. The two wheels can therefore be linked to different functions in the past: one belonged to the iron hammer, while the other drove a cutting machine. For anyone interested in the history of technology and industry, this look at preserved equipment complements the larger facilities in the industrial district.
The approximately three-kilometre “La Valle delle Fucine” route can also be walked in connection with a visit to the museum. Remains of other ironworking structures can be seen along the route, including Fucina Noe and Fucina Boche. This brings the museum’s history together with examples of former ironworking structures along the route as part of the same visit.
Historic Sites and a Race in May
The Santuario Madonna della Neve stands above Auro in Casto and was built in the mid-16th century. Its construction dates the sanctuary to a different historical period from the development of ironworking covered by the museum, which began in the 17th century.
A race also connects Casto with the surrounding mountain landscape. It has been held in May for several years. The route starts in the town of Casto, reaches Monte Nasego and passes through the municipal areas of Casto and Lodrino. The travel interests described here are therefore quite distinct: alongside the via ferratas and traces of industrial history, a route through several municipal areas is another part of the local picture.
