Discover Monno
Accommodation in Monno
Monno can be explored through a variety of interests: its churches represent several periods of construction and named works of art; at Mortirolo, the lake, mountain refuge, ascent, and climbing crag are distinct points of interest. There is also the Sagra della Patata, which celebrates a local specialty. You can therefore consider culture, landscape, and events as different focal points for your trip.
Culture and architectural history
The Chiesa di San Brizio is considered Monno’s oldest church and is dated to the time of Charlemagne. Two specific works are dated in its later construction history: it was rebuilt in 1480 and renovated in 1657. The early dating and the two later interventions mark different stages in the church’s history.
The Parrocchiale dei Santi Pietro e Paolo was built on the site of a castle believed to date from the 15th century. It preserves a granite bell tower with bifora windows from the castle. Bifora windows are openings divided into two sections; the term describes their form, while granite refers to the tower’s material. The church also contains an altarpiece by Palma il Giovane. Thus, a possible castle past, a preserved architectural feature, and a named work of art come together in one building.
The Chiesa dei Santi Sebastiano e Fabiano dates from 1781. It houses a 15th-century wood-carved Madonna and Child in the Northern European style. The church’s date of 1781 and the Madonna’s 15th-century dating provide two distinct points of reference: one for the building and the other for the work of art.
The present-day Chiesetta di San Giacomo was built between 1819 and 1822. Rather than a single year, this date gives a period for the construction of the present-day chapel. Monno’s churches can thus be viewed through different kinds of chronological references: from an early attribution and dated works to a clearly defined construction period.
Mortirolo: landscape and activities
The Rifugio al Lago del Mortirolo is located at 1,785 m above sea level on the shore of the small Lake Mortirolo. Its elevation and lakeside location provide two concrete points of reference for this scenic highlight of your trip.
The ascent to Passo Mortirolo from the junction for Monno is 13 km long. It starts at 880 m and ends at the pass at 1,852 m; the average gradient is 7.5 percent. The starting elevation, pass elevation, and gradient add details about the elevation profile to the route length.
The Falesia Mortirolo climbing crag is located in Località Mortirolo in Monno. It offers a distinct activity alongside the ascent. While the ascent is described by its length, elevation, and average gradient, the Falesia identifies a specific place for climbing.
Sagra della Patata
The Sagra della Patata celebrates the local potato specialty; the event includes dinners and entertainment. This culinary highlight complements the churches and landscape with an event of its own. If you would like to include the Sagra in your travel plans, check the event dates.
