Church architecture and rock art shape Cimbergo’s cultural offerings, while a mountain bike itinerary adds a cycling option. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first decide whether historic architecture, the rock engravings or a mountain biking activity will be the focus of your stay. The different themes offer distinct points of interest in terms of both time and content.

Churches spanning Baroque and medieval architectural history

The Chiesa Parrocchiale di Santa Maria Assunta was built around 1600 over an older chapel dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours. Its interior is Baroque in style. The single-nave church is complemented by four side altars made of inlaid marble and decorated with stucco work by Pellini S. Thus, a clear basic layout and elaborately decorated side altars come together in one church.

The Chiesa San Giovanni Battista was built in 1552 by the Confraternita dei facchini di Venezia, with the involvement of Paolo Zane, Bishop of Brescia. Its bell tower is older: dating from 1529, it features biforate windows and Ghibelline merlons. The church also contains an altarpiece from 1628, created by Baldissera D. Anna, depicting the birth of John the Baptist. The dates and details give this church a different architectural-historical character from the Baroque interior of Santa Maria Assunta.

Rock engravings and visitor routes

The Ceto, Cimbergo and Paspardo Rock Engravings Nature Reserve includes more than 400 engraved rocks. It covers around 300 hectares across Nadro di Ceto, Cimbergo and Paspardo. The rocks lie in a natural mid-mountain landscape that preserves traces of human activity over time. Archaeological evidence and its surrounding landscape are equally integral to the character of the area.

Campanine di Cimbergo is one of the nature reserve’s most important visitor areas. More than 100 engraved rocks have been identified there, but only about a dozen are included in the tourist trail. These figures represent different scales: the number of identified rocks is not the same as the number of stops on the trail. The visitor routes can be explored in a few hours or over several days, offering archaeological, ethnographic and environmental perspectives. This makes it possible to plan anything from a shorter visit to a multi-day exploration of the area.

Medieval architectural landmarks

The Rocca di Cimbergo dates from the 12th or 13th century and stands above the path leading to Campanine. The medieval Castello di Cimbergo is also associated with a striking position in the landscape: it stands on a projecting spur above the Re stream. Only a few ruins of the structure remain today. Together with the churches, the Rocca and the Castello offer another perspective on Cimbergo’s historic architecture, from preserved interiors to the remaining sections of walls.

Landscape in the wider regional area

In the wider regional area, Rifugio De Marie lies in the Volano basin. It is surrounded by the Tredenus Group and, to the south, by Pizzo Badile Camuno. The refuge is located in the middle Valle Camonica, within Parco dell’Adamello, and was built in the 1930s. Via Raetia offers panoramic views of the valley and the Concarena and Pizzo Badile massifs. These landscape features complement the local cultural themes with a regional perspective.

Mountain biking and planning your stay

A mountain bike itinerary follows a yellow-and-red-marked MTB trail along a path to Cimbergo. It offers a different focus from visits to the churches, castle ruins or rock engravings. For travellers interested in mountain biking, it is a separate activity to consider when planning a stay.

When looking for a hotel in Cimbergo, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on: churches and medieval architectural history, rock art and visitor routes lasting from a few hours to several days, or the mountain bike route to Cimbergo. This lets you plan your stay around your interests and the time you have for the rock engravings.
