Vione: Discover Cultural Sites and Trails
Accommodation in Vione
Vione offers two distinct ways to plan your trip: an ethnographic museum and historic churches explore everyday life and architectural history, while a steep pack trail leads through larch forest to Tor dei Pagà. If you are looking for a hotel, these interests can help you decide whether to focus your stay on cultural sites or a hike.
Ethnographic Museum and Everyday Life
The Museo Etnografico dell'Alta Valle Camonica 'LZuf houses numerous artifacts and objects documenting everyday life, fieldwork, and the customs and traditions of the people of Valle Camonica. Its themes range from woodworking and tools used in farming and livestock raising to women's activities such as spinning and weaving. Reconstructed historic kitchens and bedrooms complement these topics of work and customs with domestic spaces.
A visitor notice, last updated on August 1, 2024, lists daily opening hours of 5 to 7 p.m. in July and August; during the rest of the year, visits are by prior arrangement. Check the hours before your trip if you want to fit a museum visit into a set daily schedule.
Churches and Architectural History
The Parrocchiale di San Remigio di Vione is a three-aisled hall church. The nave consists of four rectangular bays, while each side aisle has four square bays. The church contains numerous Baroque wooden sculptures and paintings from outstanding art schools.
Construction began in 1580, and the church was consecrated on September 10, 1603. A semicircular fragment of the Romanesque apse of the former parish church is also preserved there; it may date from the 13th century. The same building therefore brings together the history of the present church and the uncertain dating of an older architectural feature.
The two sanctuaries can also be distinguished by their locations and architectural histories: the Santuario di Cortaiolo stands near the old road to Dalegno. The Santuario del Redentore stands on the old road to Canè. Its presbytery dates from the 17th century; the octagonal nave was added in the 18th century.
The Panca Karolingia is another distinct object: it is one meter high and 2.5 meters long, and was made from a single block of Adamello tonalite, which is also commonly called granite. Its dimensions give a concrete sense of its elongated shape; its material and single-block construction are other notable features.
Hiking and Cycling
A steep, partly unpaved pack trail leads to Tor dei Pagà through dense larch forest. The destination can be reached from Vione, or more easily from the hamlet of Canè. Both the starting point and the described condition of the trail are therefore relevant when choosing your route.
Near the hamlet of Case Vallaro, a description last updated on December 13, 2021, locates an area beside the Oglio and a cycling path. It lists about 20 parking spaces and several water points there. Check the details of the facilities on site before relying on them.
