Rovato between the Old Town and Monte Orfano

If you’re looking for a hotel in Rovato, you can plan your stay around two distinct interests: the historic centre, with its buildings and works of art, or the walking trails and views on Monte Orfano. This lets you combine exploring the town’s history with time spent in the countryside.

From the summit of Monte Orfano, you can see across the hills of Franciacorta and the Po Valley. On a clear day, you can also see Brescia in the distance and the start of the Apennines. The side of the mountain facing Rovato has walking trails of varying difficulty. A municipal notice dated 16 September 2024 states that access to Monte Orfano is free of charge. If this is important to your plans, check the current visitor information in advance. You can take the varying trail requirements into account when planning your hike.

Piazza Cavour and the old centre

Piazza Cavour was designed by architect Rodolfo Vantini. Its arcaded wings are arranged in an amphitheatrical layout around the distinctive cobblestone paving. The central arch preserves the historic entrance to the old centre and still leads to the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta and the heart of old Rovato. The square’s design, the arch and the church each offer a different starting point for exploring the historic centre.

The Church of Santa Maria Assunta houses paintings by Palma il Giovane, Antonio Paglia, Giovan Battista Pittoni, Angelo Inganni and Guadagnini, as well as a wooden Christ by Andrea Fantoni. Those with a particular interest in art will find another distinct point of interest here, alongside the square designed by Vantini. The artists’ and sculptor’s names point to different contributions to the church’s decoration; the wooden Christ complements the paintings with a work in a different material.

Traces of the fortress and monastic history

Parts of the northern and western curtain walls and cylindrical towers survive from Castello di Rovato. These towers shaped Rovato’s depiction as a city of towers in the painting cycle featuring the “Martyrdom of Saint Stephen by Stoning”. The cycle is in the apse of the church dedicated to the saint on Monte Orfano. Here, surviving architectural traces meet their artistic depiction, though they are not the same kind of evidence.

Santuario di Santo Stefano degli Appestati originally served as a diaconia, supporting travellers. The Santuario di S. Stefano preserves wall paintings dating from the 14th century to the first quarter of the 16th century. These details offer a distinct perspective on religious sites and their history. In the lunettes of Convento della Santissima Annunciata, a fresco of the Annunciation and four prophets by Girolamo Romanino survive. Romanino created the choir decoration between 1535 and 1540.

The monastery’s chronology can also be understood through two separate dates: on 1 April 1449, the municipality of Rovato granted the Servite friars a plot of land on Monte Orfano for the construction of Convento della Santissima Annunciata. In 1452, a community of Servites took up residence in the monastery. The grant of land and the monastery’s occupation mark different stages.

Getting there and planning your dates

Rovato is a major road and rail hub. The state highway 11 Padana Superiore, the Milan–Venice motorway, the Brebemi A35 motorway and the road from Valle Camonica to the plain all meet here. The Turin–Milan–Venice, Bergamo–Brescia and Rovato–Iseo–Edolo railway lines also run through the town. If you want to plan your journey around these connections, check the services that suit your travel date before setting off.

Lombardia Carne is scheduled for 15 days before Easter. If you’d like to combine your trip with the event, check the exact event date before planning your stay around it. This allows you to treat cultural visits, walks on Monte Orfano and your travel dates as separate planning decisions.
