If you are considering a hotel stay in Lonato Del Garda, you can plan it around a range of themes: the Rocca and its views of the landscape and town centre; sacred architectural history; prehistoric archaeology; or Italy’s birdlife. The weekly market adds a regular reason to visit.

Rocca: landscape and fortification

The Rocca di Lonato del Garda stands on a hill in the moraine amphitheatre. From there, you can look out over the southern part of Lake Garda on one side and the historic town centre on the other. The Rocca thus offers views of both the lake and the historic heart of the town. The fortification was used primarily for military and defensive purposes. At almost 180 metres long and around 45 metres wide on average, it is one of Lombardy’s most imposing fortifications. From the south, paths and footpaths cross the large park to a gate and drawbridge. Check whether the site is open before your visit.

Architectural history, pile dwellings and birdlife

The Chiesa di Santa Maria del Corlo dates back to the 14th century. The Basilica di San Giovanni Battista was rebuilt from 1732 onwards, with interruptions, and consecrated in 1780. The comparison therefore focuses on the church’s origins and the basilica’s later rebuilding and consecration as distinct historical points of reference.

The Lavagnone pile-dwelling settlement is one of 111 prehistoric pile-dwelling settlements in the transnational UNESCO World Heritage property “Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps”. The property was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011. Lavagnone thus places Lonato within a broader archaeological context spanning the Alpine region.

The Museo civico ornitologico “G. A. Carlotto” offers a natural-history perspective: its collection comprises around 700 specimens that represent Italy’s birdlife almost in its entirety. While the pile dwellings focus on prehistoric settlements, the museum is devoted to Italy’s birdlife. This allows you to explore archaeological evidence and a natural-history collection as distinct themes for your stay.

Visits and opening times

At the Fornaci Romane, guided tours are offered at 11:00 and 14:00 during opening hours; they are included in the admission price. If these tours are important to your plans, check shortly before travelling whether the times are still current, as arrangements may change.

The weekly market takes place on Thursdays from 7:00 to 13:00 in Piazza Martiri della Libertà. It offers a more everyday reason to visit than the historic sites. As market times may change, confirm the schedule before your visit.

Daily visiting hours for the Casa del Podestà are listed as 10:00 to 12:00 and 14:30 to 18:30. Check in advance whether visits are currently possible at these times.
