Cerveno brings together sacred art, the history of rural living and working, and the mountain landscape of the Concarena. The Santuario della Via Crucis stands beside the parish church; the Casa Museo di Cerveno preserves the history of a rural home. Monte Arsio offers both easy walks and more challenging hikes. When choosing a destination based on culture and nature, you can weigh these different themes against each other as you decide.

Sacred Art and the Santa Crus

The Santuario della Via Crucis contains a wooden Stations of the Cross dating from the 18th century. It comprises 14 stations featuring a total of 198 life-size wooden and plaster figures, created by Beniamino Simoni. The parish, together with the municipality, organises guided tours of the Via Crucis for groups and individual visitors.

The Santa Crus, also known as Santa Croce, is a sacred depiction of the Passion of Christ, held in Cerveno every ten years in May. The most recent edition took place in May 2024. The event gives the town a distinctive cultural moment, different from a day-to-day visit to its sacred art.

Casa Museo: Rural Life and Work

The Casa Museo di Cerveno preserves the original function of a rural home and construction features typical of its period. These include vaulted rooms, the use of limestone, and the original layout. The architecture is therefore a part of the town’s history in its own right: the house remains recognisable as a home through its rooms, building materials and the way they come together.

The collection includes archaeological finds, salvaged furniture and agricultural tools, particularly those related to viticulture and winemaking. It also features objects from livestock farming and alpine pastoralism, as well as crafts. The Casa Museo thus covers several aspects of rural life and work rather than focusing on a single economic activity. Group visits must be booked in advance.

Concarena, Walks and Hikes

Mount Concarena rises above Cerveno. At sunset on the days of the equinoxes, the sun shines through a deep cleft in the summit. This light phenomenon occurs at a specific point in the year. The Santa Crus and the natural phenomenon therefore offer different points of reference in time: one takes place in May every ten years, while the other occurs on the days of the equinoxes.

Monte Arsio offers easy walks as well as more challenging hikes to the 2,338-metre summit of Monte Vaccio in the Concarena massif. These options differ both in difficulty and destination: alongside walks, there are hikes with a specific summit as their stated goal. This lets you take the mountain landscape into account when choosing a destination from different perspectives.

The “Tra vigne e vini” route passes through Cerveno, following the ancient Via Valeriana along the foot of the Concarena slope. A narrow cobbled lane lined with stone walls leads to the historic centre. These details offer different scales of orientation: the route describes a path through Cerveno, while the lane provides access to the town centre.

If you are deciding between cultural and nature interests, Cerveno offers clearly defined points of interest: the Via Crucis and the Santa Crus, the architecture and collections of the Casa Museo, and walks and hikes on Monte Arsio. The route along the Via Valeriana and the access to the historic centre add specific links to local paths.
