Lozio: Hiking Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Lozio
Lozio offers several different points of interest for a stay: marked hiking trails, a cave once used as a place of refuge, and buildings and remains with histories of their own. A family-run bakery and pastry shop adds concrete local products to the picture of the town.
Hiking Trails and Landscape
There are 26 marked hiking trails in the Lozio Valley, shown on the hiking trail map and the map of the hamlets. One specifically named route is the Trecciolino: a forest trail that runs through the Lat area to the former Puit quarry. This gives you both an overview of the marked trails in the valley and a detailed description of a trail connected with Lat and the former quarry to help you find your way.
Another notable feature of the municipality is the canal. It was built in the late 1950s and crosses large parts of Lozio, from Villa through Sommaprada to Laveno. The named hamlets give an idea of its route through the municipality. The canal and the Trecciolino are different features: one is a built structure that runs through several hamlets, while the other is a forest trail connecting Lat with the former Puit quarry.
A Cave and a Castle with Their Own Histories
Al Cudinì is a limestone cave in the Concarena, at the foot of Contramagna. In the past, farmers used the cave as a place of refuge and overnight shelter. Describing it as a limestone cave and noting its former use thus tells two different aspects of the same place: its geological nature and its role as accommodation for farmers in earlier times.
The remains of the Nobili Castle stand on a steep ridge between the two valleys of Doss to the east and Re to the west. Its position between the valleys is a distinctive geographic reference for the castle remains. Those interested in local history will find a different perspective here than at the cave: the focus is on the castle remains and their position on the ridge, while Al Cudinì is defined above all by its rock and former use.
Church and Building History in Villa
The parish church of Santi Pietro e Paolo in Villa dates back to a small church that already existed in the 14th century. The most significant restoration of the parish church took place between 1602 and 1604. It later received frescoes by Antonio Guadagnini, created between 1884 and 1894. These dates distinguish the church’s early history, its restoration, and its later artistic decoration.
The church’s history can therefore be viewed in several stages rather than reduced to a single construction date. The frescoes offer a point of interest in their own right: both their creator and the period in which they were made are known. For a stay focused on architectural history and art, the church offers a different emphasis from the historic sites in the landscape.
Put del Fer and Local Baking Traditions
The remains of the Put del Fer bridge are in the Località Segheria, beyond the hamlet of Villa. Until the 1960s, the bridge could also be crossed by small carts. The name Put del Fer comes from the bridge’s horseshoe shape. Today, it is the remains that are noted at this site; the bridge’s former accessibility to carts is part of its history and does not describe its current condition.
The local baking tradition also offers a concrete insight into Lozio. A family-run bakery and pastry shop offers fresh bread every day, as well as pizza, focaccia, crostata, cookies, Spongada di Lozio, and rosemary breadsticks. The selection ranges from bread and pastries to savory products. If you want to include local food in your travel plans, these specialties are another aspect of the area alongside hiking trails and local history.
Getting There and Finding a Hotel
Lozio can be reached via Provincial Road 92, which climbs from Malegno. When looking for a hotel in Lozio, you can use your interests to guide your choice: hiking, historic buildings, the history of the church, or local baked goods each offer a different focus for your stay.
