Edolo combines church architecture and art with historical traces in Mu and hiking trails of varying lengths. If you’re looking for a hotel in Edolo, your interests can guide your travel plans: would you like to focus on frescoes and architecture, explore traces of the past, or set aside time for trails through the landscape? The places and routes described here offer concrete starting points.

Church Art and Architectural History

The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista is a Renaissance church dedicated to Edolo’s patron saint, St John the Baptist. The church preserves frescoes by Paolo da Caylina il Giovane, who worked there around 1530–35. The Pieve di Santa Maria Nascente offers a different architectural highlight: its 68-metre-high bell tower is the tallest in Valle Camonica.

The Chiesa dei SS. Ippolito e Cassiano di Mu also has a clear historical context. Its current form dates from the 18th century; the vaults of the presbytery and nave are almost entirely covered with frescoes. Together, these three churches showcase different aspects of the area’s artistic and architectural heritage: a Renaissance church with attributed frescoes, a striking bell tower, and an interior that is almost entirely frescoed.

Historical Traces in Mu

The Ponte Vecchio once linked Edolo and Mu. The Castello also stands in the hamlet of Mu: the ruins of a medieval fortification mentioned in documents as early as the 13th century. This is distinct from the archaeological site of Castello di Mu in Edolo, which is part of UNESCO World Heritage Site No. 94, “Rock Drawings in Valle Camonica.” The area’s history can thus be understood through its buildings, the former connection between Edolo and Mu, and an archaeological site.

Another historical trace lies along a hiking route: the Sentiero n. 171 – Sentiero dei Cervi, Dosso Turicla leads to anti-aircraft machine-gun emplacements from the First World War that are still visible. Those interested in historical sites will find a connection to military history here, linked to the route through the landscape described above.

Hiking Trails of Varying Lengths

The Sentiero n. 634 – Cima Aviolo starts in Località Pozzuolo, within the municipality of Edolo, and leads to the broad hollow below Monte Aviolo. The Sentiero n. 171 – Sentiero dei Cervi, Dosso Turicla starts at the chapel in Località Mola and follows an old military mule track through a larch forest. It passes through a wildlife protection zone, where deer and other wild animals may be spotted during the hike. The route thus combines forest, possible wildlife sightings, and the historical emplacements mentioned above.

For a longer hike, there is the Alta Via dell’Adamello – Sentiero No. 601: the long-distance trail, almost 85 kilometres long, runs from Breno to a point just before the north face of the Adamello and ends in Edolo, or vice versa. It runs within the Parco dell’Adamello. Thanks to the access and connecting trails from each main valley, the Alta Via can also be completed in stages as shorter hikes. A shorter route with a specified distance is Stage 7 of the Cammino di Carlo Magno: it covers 20.2 kilometres from Grevo to Edolo. The stage and the almost 85-kilometre long-distance trail therefore differ significantly in their stated total lengths and routes.

Cyclists also have a named option: the MTB-Itinerario Sentiero dei Cervi, Dosso Turicla can be reached from Edolo via the SS39 and Via Primavera to the chapel in LocalitĂ  Mola. For your choice, this means the route descriptions range from access to a hollow below Monte Aviolo to a 20.2-kilometre stage and a long-distance trail of almost 85 kilometres. This can help you decide whether culture, a particular route, or plans for a longer hike will shape your stay.
